Seeds dead? First grow

I have 3 seeds from Mephisto Genetics, germinated using toilet paper in DVD case, wrapped in shirt and tucked into tent for 50+ hours until tap roots were showing. Planted about an inch deep into Roots Organic soil with Kind Soil (hot soil - water only) underneath. (3gal fabric pots)

I kept my light on at 30 inches with the tops getting around 14,000 lux for when they sprouted. Helped keep my temps around 75 and humidity around 55-60%.

The soil always feels dry, even like 10 minutes after misting all around top 3-4 times. I'm worried they dried out and died

It's been 48 hours and no sprout, and I gently moved the soil aside. The seed that had the longest tap root is now more of a white color and the tap root looked skinny or shriveled. The second seed remains unchanged, can't tell if tap root is any longer. The third seed had a tiny tap root when planted, just poking out, now the seed seems smaller and it's almost as if the tap root started growing back inside lol

I just turned off the lights, covered the seeds with less soil (closer to the top) and made sure they were moist. Temps sitting around 66-70F with 70-80% RH with the lights off

Any chance these girls might make it still, or should I chalk this one up as a learning experience?

Thanks everyone

Chalk it up to experience
Start new seeds and go buy some simple seed starter media
You can't drop seedlings into hot soil and expect positive results
I know they are autos but at least a couple weeks in a beer cup shouldn't hurt

I didn't drop them into the hot soil. 3gal fabric pots, bottom is filled with 2.5lbs of Kind Soil, the entire top base media is Roots Organic Original. I've read tons of grow journals and talked directly with people who have done the same with amazing results

I'm more curious/concerned about the tap root situation, the color change in the one seed, and the watering

I see
well most seed failures are moisture related
Sorry I can't be more helpful

I paid $80 for three seeds from one of the few legal cannabis suppliers in Canada and none of the seeds sprouted. Went grey market and all the seeds sprouted.

I really don't think this is the problem. They are all direct from Mephisto Genetics (highly reputable) and they showed tap roots within 48 hours in toilet paper

Alway start your autos in small cups even tho they say you can't transplant autos that's horseshit. What is probably happening is your medium is drying out to quick bc off the larger bags, fill a 4" starter cup with soiless medium and completely soak it, drain it and let it sit for 48hrs.

Every one has their own way of course. I like the paper towel method and not only with cannabis. The success rate for me is higher with paper towels. With every seed. Plus you know which ones have germinated and which ones will be tossed away without wasting space.

That black root thingy, i got that once too. That one is dead. The shriveled one doesnt sound good either but i think there may be some hope left for the other one. Dont dig around the soil. Keep it moist and hope for the best.

Didn't mean to say they were bad, just shit happens. The next time on the horse might be a great ride.

Oh, I get what you mean. I'm pretty sure I just didn't water properly, and I'm not sure the lights helped either lol

Thanks for the help everyone. Going to let these ones ride it out with the lights off and some more water and see what happens. If they don't show any potential in a few days, I'll just start fresh and plant direct :(

I bet they were overwatered. Wet your soil before you plant, and leave it alone for 2 days. If it's dried out, mist or water your soil lightly and wait again

Seeds won't drown in a freshly wetted soil, but will drown in a constantly wet soil.

Or they could be underwatered. And if so, follow those same directions

Yeah , really not a fan of that paper towel shit.

I use root riot cubes , plant the seeds directly into them , whack them in the propigator and off they go , they go into their final 10 litre pots after about a week and its so fucking easy to just hand dig the hole , pop the cube in and fill it round.

Its far more robust than faffing about with tap roots etc etc.

And just remember , when you plant cannabis seeds directly into medium , they need to be planted pointed end UP (tap root will go up , realise its edge of medium , then do a hard down and push upwards , this almost always ensures the seed case comes off naturally) if you point them down the tap root will go down a bit.....up......THEN realise its the edge and go down again , lots and lots of wasted energy and have seen this first hard , full wet and dry cycle is very important especially in soil , its very easily to overwater ,

As rule if they are not drooping they are fine , but medium needs to be 10-20% of full wet weight before you even want to really think of watering (have to be careful with those root riot cubes thats for sure , had no problems tho) I water them gently with a small cup/jug when in the cube tray with the propigator.

It's been a few more days and still no sprout. I decided to check again since I got off to a bad start. Walter is dead :(

Strawberry Nuggets and Sour Crack are making progress under the soil, going to cover them lightly again and lightly water with a spray bottle directly around them instead of around the entire pot. Maybe there is hope

Edit: Decided to try another Walter White seed, but this time I'll germinate in the soil directly. I can't keep the temps over 65 without the light on though. RH between 60-80%

I suggest a heating mat for the cold weather. I had to get one this past winter to start my seeds on the cold floor. Can get by without it, but it helps.
