Seeds won't germinate please help I'm new

Hi

This is my first time growing and it looks like I've fell at the first step already

I put the seeds in a cup of water and left them over night well about 20hrs
None of them sank they all floated.

I then put the seeds into tissue paper and a lunchbox and put them in my airing cupboard.

It's been 36hrs and now nothing

I was thinking about putting them in my tent still in the lunchbox and put a towel over it so it can get some good heat

Please help, thank you

Sometimes they don't, I use Jiffy peat pellets under a pleasantly warm T5 from day one, it works for me so I keep doing it. I wouldn't recommend the glass of water technique, though I've seen people talk about it. My $0.02.

I always put mine in a wet coffee filter on a small plate and put it on top of my stereo receiver for a little warmth. Check it a couple times a day so it doesn't dry out.

Give them more time. Sometimes seeds will germinate later than you expect. Everyone has their own method but the general idea is the same, keep em moist and warm. The best way I have come up with is to moisten a paper towel put my beans in fold it over then seal it in a zip lock. Then I put them in a warm place indoors. Leave em there for a few days then.... bingo.this HTML class. Value is https://m.youtube.co

The most important part of popping seeds is the temp, you want 75 to 80 degrees, doesn't matter how you heat them, lightbulb, cable box, heating mat, sunshine, etc. And keep the sprouting seeds out of the light. Light will kill the taproot.
The easiest way to start seeds is in a cup of soil (I mix seedling mix with fox farms) fully saturate the cups and let them reach the target temp. Scuff the seeds, there is a waxy coat on all seeds by scuffing it makes it easier for the water to penetrate the husk, this is why some soak seeds in a cup of water but scuffing works much better. Plant the seeds horizontal about 1/2" deep when planting horiz you don't have to worry about planting upside down. I use a small matchbox and glue a piece of sandpaper to the bottom of the box then put the seeds in the box and shake. For heat I personally use an under cabinet light in the kitchen I keep a thermometer there to monitor the temp, I keep a bottle of water under the light so it stays at temp also, keep the cups saturated most seeds will pop in 3 to 5 days depending upon how deep they are buried.

I do not recommend the wet paper towel method of cracking the seeds, all you can do is possibly damage the taproot once cracked, plus you have to expose the taproot to light which is never good. If the towel dries out your finished. It's always better to start in a soil cup or a rockwool cube. If you don't touch it you can't screw it up.

Jiffy pellets all the way. Keep me in perfect temp in the dark. Always works with me. Also some seeds have a harder time with soaking water up so I recommend scuffing them a little and then putting back in the cup. Or throwing them in a jiffy pellet. Hope your luck changes.

36 hours is too soon to worry. I do mine in a somewhat similar way and 24-36 hours in the paper is when they start to pop. Give another day of two and see what you get.

Jiffy pots are fine if you keep them wet. The jiffy (peat) pot is great because it's nute level is near 0 which is great for seeds. But those jiffy's have burnt me a few times over the past couple of decades. Got busy and or distracted, and missed a watering, come back to find already sprouted seedlings dead. Peat is a great soil augment because of its moisture retention, but by itself it is very selfish and wants to retain moisture and will actually pull the moisture out of a seedling. So yes the pellets work great, just be mindful.

Again I go back to soil start. A cup filled with a hollowed out center area for seedling mix (which is mostly peat). You won't have to add food or augment anything for 2 to 3 wks just water, and then it will be time for the first or last transplant depending upon what you're doing. It's easy

If you're going to be lazy your plants going to die either way. Those of us that take it serious never let that happen... at least I never have. No problems what so ever. If you let your little cube or cup of dirt dry up its going to die to.. I've gone without watering and they never die.

Paper towel method : Soak seeds in water. In 24 hours check on them , if floating still , gently ( push seed under water ) , if it sinks leave it there. If it still floats let it soak longer.
In either 12 or 24 hours , seeds may split open and small tap root tip may be seen.

Get 2 paper plates and a white piece of paper towel ( use a plain one ) no scented paper or tissue. Place soaked or partially cracked seeds on moistened paper towel. Fold other half over seeds and dampen with water ... Moist not too wet. Cover with other plate and place in a dark place ( room temp ) . You can drape a towel or something to create a dark " place ". Checkk in the morning and you should see taproots. Keep paper towel moist

YOU CAN ALSO PLACE A PRESOAKED SEED INTO A JIFFY STARTER POD.
Make sure you don't touch an exposed taproot , you can possibly kill it.

This works every time. Unless you got some old ass seeds .NO MANHANDLING , NO SCUFFING , NO TEABAGGING THEM ( sorry I'm hitting the TrainWreck and I b tripping ) or OTHER MAGIC TRICKS.

I was under the impression that if they didn't sink the first 5 min. That they are not volatile and will not sprout no matter what you do. But I am an amateur and don't know as much as others. Is there anyone that can clear this up? Thank you in advance.

All but one seed as now got the root showing :)

My next question (I have read and read but everyone does this different so just want people's opinions on this)

Where do I put the seeds in the soil pot now?

1) in the tent under the light about 1meter away (HPS 600w)

2) put in window sill until they have their first set of leaves?

Thank you

Run your tent as it would normally be running for a few hours so you can check temps and make any needed adjustments. Once you know your tent temps are good and the area is ready then toss them in there. The new sprouts need that light.
