Harper’s Conservatives are turning sick and dying Canadians into criminals. You heard me, about a third of medical marijuana users will become criminals in just a few weeks.

Patients who had been growing their own medicine for pennies a pound are being ordered to take apart their gardens and throw away their home-grown cannabis. After April 1, they will only be allowed to possess and use cannabis grown by newly licensed companies, and sold at street prices.

These changes are not going to solve any problems. Instead, they will criminalize patients, confuse law enforcement, and lead to a great deal of harm and suffering.

We are launching a public outreach campaign to let people know that these changes are not only damaging to the people involved, they are also wasting even more of your tax dollars. Help us spread the word by making a small donation of $3 today.

People use this plant to help alleviate a wide variety of conditions, ranging from epilepsy, cancer and AIDS to arthritis, muscle pain and migraines. With no substantial long term harm or dangerous side effects, medicinal users should be allowed to grow what a doctor prescribed them without being harassed by the federal government's new rules.

The new rules will have a devastating effect on marginalized members of our society. These changes will effectively price around a third of current, legal medicinal users out of the market for their medicine. Patients who had been lawfully growing their own cannabis are being forced to choose between following the new rules and being able to afford their medicine. Some could end up going to prison, putting their lives at risk.

We need people to realize what the federal government is doing. Creating more criminals will not increase public safety or make people lives easier. Help us get the message out there by making a small contribution of $3 right now.

In our campaign to hold a referendum, we wanted to save taxpayer money and make BC a safer province. The upcoming changes to the medical marijuana program are one more step in the wrong direction. These regulations will clog the courts, waste police time, create criminals out of otherwise law-abiding citizens, and directly attack those who need this medicine the most.

Sensible BC Director

P.S. Thanks to everyone who gave last month. We ended up making $6500 by the 15th and we are incredibly grateful. Our focus now is building awareness about these dangerous new medical cannabis regulations. Please consider making a $3 dollar donation to help us build the opposition.

We are also encouraging people to spread the word! Please forward this email to your friends and family, and help us fight these changes.

Stand up for patients

On April 1st, thousands of already suffering Canadians lose access to a cheap and effective medicine which they have, until now, produced in their own home. Medicinal users of cannabis are already struggling with serious health issues, and cannot afford this fight.

Patients who have been legally growing their own medicine at home are being forced to dismantle their home gardens, destroy all the medicine they currently have, and from April Fool’s day onward, only buy by mail-order from one of the newly licensed companies at an estimated $8-$12 per gram.

Thousands of patients across Canada will be forced into bankruptcy, or worse, into criminality by continuing to grow their own. Stand up to the Federal Government and sign our petition today!

Where does your mayor stand?

Municipal elections are coming up across BC this Fall, and we need to make sure that local politicians are going to stand up for sensible marijuana laws. Check out a few municipalities that have already stated that they will not be enforcing the upcoming changes to the medical marijuana program.

Do you know where your mayor and city councillors stand on this important issue? If not, get in contact with them as soon as possible and let us know where their position. Even if Christy Clark will not implement sensible marijuana laws provincially, there is still plenty of room for action at the municipal level. Get in contact with your local politicians today!

The political landscape is shifting

The marijuana movement is gaining ground, even the Conservative Party has started talking about the “loosening” of marijuana laws. The changes would allow police to issue fines in addition to criminal charges - but this option is simply not enough.

These changes do absolutely nothing to stop police from wasting our tax resources by issuing tickets for marijuana possession - and they definitely don’t take the proceeds away from organized crime. Peter MacKay’s proposal is slightly better than the existing system, but it’s simply not good enough.

Now is the time for us to push harder. The Conservatives are back pedalling in the face of growing public support for marijuana reform. We need to keep pushing forward!

Thanks for your support - stay sensible!

Nick Whitehead - Director of Organizing

P.S. We are aiming for 10,000 signatures on our petition to stand up for patients’ rights. Please to share widely on social media, so we can show the federal government that this issue is important to you. Thanks again! Every action makes a difference.
