I could go off on a tangent like many others before me and express my sadness for his death and that I wish I could have seen him on stage with my own eyes, but the fact is that he has been in comedy for over forty years. I remember back in the day when George was cracking jokes about how many heart attacks he and Richard Pryor have had.
Carlin enjoyed a monumental career, he has gained millions of lifelong fans (myself included) and he has solidified a lifelong position in the annals of history.
Who took on the FCC in the 70s for the right to free media expression? Who preached to the converted and non-converted alike about the dangers of religious dogma? Who had the courage and tenacity to point out the ignorance of government officials and of the illegal occupation of Vietnam?
George Carlin invented stand-up comedy wrought with social commentary. He saw what was wrong with the world and presented it in a comedic yet well articulated form. Comedy that made you think, not stupid catchphrases and moronic behavior that has become the foundation of new, dare I say, mainstream comedy (Dane Cook, Russell Peters, Will Ferrel, etc.)
But dont let it get you down. In his 40+ years in show business he has released a wealth of material and performances that are freely available to watch on google video or for purchase at many retailers. He lived a long and fulfilling life, making it to 71 despite the myriad of heart problems he experienced over the past twenty or so years. Personally I think his most recent HBO special to be my all-time personal favorite; an insightful and aged Carlin, wiser and funnier than previous incarnations.
A good long life, a loving family, the allegiance of millions of fans, and a wealth of ideals that will only become more concrete over time.
