Silica gel?

Why would you use silica during your drying process? Let it cure naturally and slowly, you don't want to force dry. Silicon supplements are supposed to be used primarily during veg to build a strong resilient plant; it is used in the form of a silicate (I believe the desired anion is SiO4). How were you thinking of using it as a drying agent?

Has anyone used silica gel at any stage of the drying process and if so did it work well?
I tried it based on a post on RIU using the cheap stuff available as cat litter. They claimed it would help keep your humidity at 65% without burping. I didn't find it helped or hurt. Just an unnecessary extra step.
