you no i say what ever works for your plants go for it ,example i'm new to indoor growing and i joined this site to get help on thing s i didn't understand ,i wrote a post on Co2 because that's a big issue it seems .the very first reply was some damned nerd with a bunch of damned graphs on how Co2 works, then there was a huge debate of all the fucking scientist on this site, finally i had one guy tell me ,that as small as my room was i really didn't need it.what the fuck really is it just a newbie thing ,because i tell you ,between nutrient and lighting and air flow that i was reading and trying from some of these so called scientist and there proven results and trying to make something out of all there debates ,damned near cost me my plants finally i decided it was just, a i fucked up when i was a newbie and i'm going to return the favor on this newbie ,so i took the big step and have been going on my own ,i don't have the best looking grow but my plants talk to me when something is wrong ,all bullshit a side there are a few people i keep a watch on because they really do seem to care that we all have the same goal ,to grow are on shit and want it legal, because i really do need it and don't abuse it to bring attention to myself, between rollitup and the dank den i will figure it out .you no what i would beat that my indian ancestors didn't put all this fucking science into there grow ,so chill out set back and smokum peace pipe .holler at you all later

So my question still remains open. How do you know it's the silicon and not the potassium making the difference?

You would need to add an equivalent amount of potassium to a control plant to see whether the control also sees an improvement in stem strength. So who can do the math to figure out how much potassium to add to the control? How will you design the control?

This isn't about me telling you how you should grow pot, but me asking ANYONE to prove silicon actually makes a difference or whether it's the potassium making the difference. I haven't seen one experiment on this using a proper control (adding the equivalent amount of potassium to the control)
