Well to be fair, before they were making grow lights LEDs were all rated "__w equivalent." Grow lights were the first that I saw to actually go by true watts. I think Spectrum King was the first company I saw doing it.
True. But that’s cause they light up a room the same way a __w incandescent light would. Vie visible light comparison it makes sense. Originally, companies like Mars would put 300 say 10w diodes on a fixture and then say that it’s a 3000w light despite using some crappy 300w driver and running it at 175w. It’s shady as fuck. These days these shitty Amazon companies just put whatever number they feel like it seems.
It’s a damn shame too because LED grow lights are the future. Since most of the shady companies that are doing it are Chinese then the Chinese sellers get a bad reputation. The reality is, the majority of the worlds electronics are built there and thanks to websites like Alibaba, consumers in the US have direct access to the manufacturers that build them. There are incredible deals to be had and lots of people are missing out.
On the other hand, the shitty reputation keeps prices low so people that have done their research can take advantage of the crazy deals.
A majority of the new LED lights that are hitting the market from established grow equipment companies that had not specialized in lighting in the past as well as new cannabis focused LED companies are getting their lights from the same manufacturers we have direct access to on alibaba. They get the same lights in bulk and have those exact same manufacturers screen print or laser etch their logos on the product and then sell them at a markup of at least 200%.
There are benefits to buying from those companies instead of direct from alibaba like warranties, actual customer support and a higher likelihood of top bin diodes and drivers. But to me, and tons of other folks, it’s not worth paying they 2x, 3x or even 4x markup!
