Smart Pots!...

doublejj, I hear ya that you get awesome insulation from a larger pot - and that the plant itself will eventually shade the pot. and if you're in a greenhouse, you probably aren't getting direct sun on the outside of the pot anyway. however, I would want to put straw or something similar around the outside of the pot as to gain max root space - let those babies grow right to the edge, mulch the surface, and utilize every last bit of space in that pot! ahh but herein lies the difference between pots vs ground - a plant in even somewhat decent ground will grow bigger, I believe. because it can grow a bigger root system. the largest plants I've ever seen were in the ground in 12x12 holes - and while you can grow a 10 pounder in a 300 gallon pot - these things were even bigger than that! if you have shitty ground - smart pots all the way baby!
 
I would occasionally have root rot issues in the ground......I've never had root rot in a smart pot.......
 
Double jj you say you have experienced root rot issues in the ground but never in the smart pots do you think that is because the smart pots provide that extra breathability to the roots?? I can see variables coming up in straight holes in the ground, such as the ground around the amended soil not draining adequately, etc.

Idk JJ, I've had a lot of problems this year using smart pots, a lot of issues that aren't completely due to the smart pots. But I have noticed they don't work the best in hot climates..

how big are your pots bro, and what kind of issues?.......What soil?.....
 
A lot of leaf curling upwards at the edges, rolling inward, and a whole lot of yellowing and dying leaves. Been trying to pinpoint the problem, thought it was a boron and copper deficiency because the new growth was stunted, with leaves not fully developing, yellow and burn on the tips. May be a bad batch of soil I mixed, so I flushed a few times and am manually feeding at the moment. I'm seeing new green growth, so I'm definitely happy about that.
 
It may also be a root bound issue as well. I'm using only a 20 gal for a 5 ft Vortex, and a 30 gal for a 6 ft Kushzilla. Definitely short changed this year, and will look for more room for growth next season.
 
I would give smart pots another try. I know it sounds wasteful but try using a much bigger pot & some new soil. I've very good results with 100gl pots. Good luck
 
How are the leaves yellowing? From the inside out? From the outside in? From back to front?? Front to back?? I ask because I wonder if its s magnesium issue... could be a number different of things...pics would help...but from the sounds of it I don't think it is a problem directly related with the smart pots.
 
I'm using 30 gallon geopots (same thing as a smart pot) this year and they're working great. They do drink more than my plastic pots but I don't mind.
 
I just got three 200 gallon smartpots delivered today for next years outdoor grow. I'm tired of screwing myself with pots that are to small. Which is exactly what I did this year. It can make it a royal pain in the ass and also make it harder to diagnose problems when you know they are root bound to begin with. I'm done with that shit ! :wall:
