Smoking a pipe

Sorry guys, didn’t know where to stick this!

Anyway, I can’t roll for shit so whilst out and about yesterday I bought myself a pipe and some small meshes. Now I need to know how to use the thing!

There are 4 removable parts to the pipe; the smoking tube which screws out, the chamber, a small ‘funnel’ above that which I pushed the mesh down into and a screw on lid with a hole in the top.

Obviously the MJ goes on top of the mesh and you light it on top of that but the questions I really have are, how does it stay lit? Do I screw the lid back on after lighting it? What’s the hole in the lid for? Is there a different technique to smoking pipes as opposed to smoking joints? Do I grind up the MJ to go in the pipe as I would if I was rolling it? What are the pros and cons of smoking a pipe? Also, the tube you ‘suck’ on as I said is removable, is this just so you can clean it properly?

Ahhh okay, cheers man! Do I pack it pretty tight with the grinded MJ? The hole in the top is pretty small, like smaller than a pea. I’ll give it a whirl thought. Thanks again.

Secondly, If you can't roll a joint, or know how to smoke out of a pipe then how do you smoke it?

I’ve never touched a pipe before and the last thing I want is to breathe in a load of ash or to be pissed that the MJ keeps going out. As I’ve said, I was pretty sure I knew how it’s set up, just looking for reassurance plus I didn’t know what the idea of the lid was for. After posting on here and with a quick reply, I now know. You haven’t offended me. :)


I apologise for my ignorance, but I figured it's best off asking before I start wasting more of my MJ.

I’m not much of a smoker. I have smoked in the past but I grew a very, very small grow out of curiosity in seeing if I could grow something (was bored) so now I am looking to smoke to fruits of my grow. My friends roll for me. I can roll, but pretty badly. So I thought why waste something I’ve grown over the last few weeks and spent care on, only for it to be rolled into crappy joints? Made sense to buy a pipe.

I have smoked in the past but I grew a very, very small grow out of curiosity in seeing if I could grow something (was bored) so now I am looking to smoke to fruits of my grow. In a pipe it will rarely ever stay lit.
Also you learn how hard to pull and you'll never get ash in your mouth.
