Round 2
The Hunt for Sour

I've got a friend who really wanted a sour experience so I've popped two whole packs to find some fruity, sour and whatever else comes along for the ride.

In addition to the search for flavor, I will also start trying to make some seeds with this round. Will be collecting all of the male pollen from each strain for a quasi-open pollination and also selecting the best potential parents from each as well.

I've dropped these in water yesterday the 27th of Nov:
Bodhi - Kodama (12 seeds)
AK Bean Brains - Americanna/Durban (13 seeds)

I'm changing my format from four 15 gallon pots to multiple 3 gallon pots for ease of maneuverability and to keep the plants on the smaller side. I'm anticipating a serious challenge of managing all 25 plants well, if 25 even make it to flower.

Should be a fun one, feel free to drop in!

12/13 Americanna/Durban have tails

10/12 Kodama have tails

Not giving up hope on the last 3, still have a couple more days to open up. The rest have been put into their starting solo cups.

24/25 are up and in dirt. I still have one Kodama that's being stubborn, will it be a perfect 25/25? Find out next time...

And the plans change!

My entire Americanna/Durban pack failed to get above the soil. They were quick to get tap roots, but none of them made it to seedlings. No hard feelings, I've reached out to AKBB to see if he can help. Figure they were just old stock and it happens.

Kodama had 11/12 sprout tap roots, so far I have 8 above soil, 1 I killed by accident when looking for signs of life in the solo cup, and 2 more that are deciding whether they want to become seedlings or just die off in the soil.

So, out of my original 25, only 10 remain and only 8 have made it above soil. This calls for reinforcements.

Replacement genetics for Round 2 hit the water today.

AKBB - Blue Raspberry (7 Seeds)
*really excited to run this along with Kodama, hoping to do some pollination and work towards a blue raspberry breeding tool*
AKBB - Kali Mist x A1 (7 Seeds)
Coastal Seeds - Swazi Burmese (3 Seeds)

Logic is that ~80% of these new seeds make it seedlings and I end up with 20-24 plants for pheno hunting.

21 Seedlings so far

Much better luck with the replacements.

2/3 Swazi Burmese (SB) - Had one that wouldn't let go of it's helmet and died. All three ended up making it above the soil.
7/7 Kali Mist x A1 (KMA1)
4/7 Blue Raspberry (BR) - the other three are in various stages of germinating. I think this will end up being 5/7 at least.

8/12 Kodama - this is the final number

Not much to report, this is the boring phase.

Into the tent we go

Some updated numbers on the cultivars:
2/3 SB
6/7 KMA1
6/7 BR
8/12 Kodama
Total: 22

Up potted the Kodama to their 3 gallon final homes. The rest need another week in solo cups to build roots big enough for the 3 gallon.

Some interesting notes so far:

-The Blue Raspberry (BR) all grew freakishly long stems before putting any effort towards making new leaves. 3 of them are currently side ways growing like a vine. They are light hungry so they are on the top of the Kodama pots.

- Kali Mist x A1 has one runt which grew in a corkscrew before deciding it wanted to live and out real leaves on. Still deciding if I’ll cull it.

More Up Pots - Full 1st Tent

Biggest BR's and KMA1's are in pots after they grew roots through the bottom of the solo cups.

The last 7 will be in their 3 gallon homes by this Wednesday and each tent will hold 11 plants until sexes are determined.

Double Tent and Deficiencies

Progress is being made as I’ve got every plant into their final pot. Turned on my Meijiu light and got my second tent occupied.

Half of my Kodama plants are showing a deficiency of some sort, I’m thinking it’s Mg. I applied an Epsom Foliar to see if it helps. The other alternative is that the roots haven’t hit the nitrogen rich layer yet and it’s an N deficiency. All have similar structure except the front right one. It’s way less compact. So far I’m seeing 2 leaf shapes, one fatter and one skinnier.

You can see the floppy BR in the middle. They all grew so similar as seedlings lol. Loooong necks. Their more advanced siblings are growing normal now so I expect these
two to follow suit.

The SB on the left are both very similar. The KMA1 have the best looking structure of all the plants so far. The runt of the bunch is in the front center. When I pulled it from the solo cup the root system was barely developed. I’m going to let it do it’s thing and see if it survives.

My mechanical 240v timer sucked so I had to grab a digital one. Now that I’m all prepped I’ll be flipping these next week, Monday or Tuesday.

Deficiency solved?

Looks like I’ve staved off disaster as the new growth looks much greener and the older leaves that weren’t damaged seem to not be getting worse.

I am noticing some clawing happening so I’m watching my watering to see if it’s due to the roots being too wet. If it’s N toxicity that would be a bummer, but nothing too bad because I’m flipping to flower soon.

I can’t seem to find a fucking 240v timer that wants to work. I’m going to be buying a third one tomorrow if I can’t troubleshoot the one I have.

Blumats installed
After my issues with the Blusoak tape (entirely due to not having enough height for my water storage…6ft was not enough.) I picked up the drop emitters and have daisy chained them across each cultivar. For every 5 pots there is one carrot and the rest are watered based on that carrot.

So far I’ve sexed 5/8 Kodamas. 3 male and 2 female. Should know a lot more in the next week.

The slender leaf Kodama that is the tallest of the bunch is a female, and the close second in height is a male. Early front runners for my selection seed run.

I’m worried that the big female is going to be a monster since I’ll be putting all the females back into veg so I can get optimal timing for pollination.

Males and Females Separated

I have finally sexed enough plants to move the males and any that are later to show sex into one tent and the females into the other.

The males and any yet to show sex will stay on 11/13 light cycle. The females are back to 24 hrs of light until I start collecting pollen. I want to ensure that I have the pollen collected prior to flowering out my females so I have optimal timing for pollination.

F/M By Cultivar
Kodama 5/3
KMA1 2/2 (2 still unsexed)
BR 3/1 (2 still unsexed)
SB (2 still unsexed)

Everyone plant sexed
excluding the KMA1 runt

Final F/M tallies for my plants

Kodama 5/3
KMA1 2/3 (runt unsexed still)
BR 5/1
SB 1/1

Overall I have 13 females and 8 males. I will be able to do F2s on all varieties and make some crosses.

Jesus Christ it’s a Jungle

I misgendered a KMA1 and SB so in actuality I now have 15 Females and 6 Males. Normally that would be awesome to have a 71% female rate, but not when you want to make some seeds. Crazy feeling to be wanting more males.

Bummed I won’t be making any SB F2’s, so I’ll be sure to have some clones in case one or both turn out excellent.

Flower is on, Pollen is Collecting
I’ve flipped the females back to flower. The KMA1 went straight back to putting out puff balls.

I’ll need to rearrange, clean up the plants, and add some nutrients one last time before flower hits its peak.

My males have been dumping pollen for a couple days so I took cuttings from all of them and have begun my pollen collection. The next month should be a good yield of pollen.

These plants just took off this week. More photos tomorrow, and a defoliation to help with air flow.
