Snow White & Red Dragon

The Setup,

Seeds: 1 Nirvana Snow White, 1 Barney's Red Dragon (both feminized)

Lights: 4x 23w 6500k cfls(seedlings) 250w MH (vegitating) 250w HPS (flowering)

Medium(Snow White): Rockwool Starter Cube, 4" Rockwool Cube, Via Stone grow rocks, Bucket DWC with 8" netpot lid and 8" air stone.

Medium(Red Dragon): Starting in party cup with Fox Farm Light Warrior soil, then transplanting to bigger pot with Fox Farm Ocean Forest soil, final pot size undecided.

Nutrients: Technaflora's Recipe For Success, for both hydro and soil.

Grow Room: 78x42(inches) closet, the actual area that I'm growing in and lining with mylar is 42x42(inches). Height is irrelevant because it's definately tall enough.

Ventilation: I have a 16" pedestal fan to blow between tops of plants and the light, and I'm getting an inline duct fan to pull air out of the closet into my room.

This is my first grow so feel free to help out. I'll be starting as soon as I get all my supplies, It should all be here by Wednesday(3-10) so I should start the day after and I'll get some pics of my setup on here.

sweet!!!welcome to RIU!
Thanks! Love this site, I've learned quite a bit lurkin around here, now it's time I give it a shot. I'm stoked! :hump:

Cool,

Doing a FF soil grow myself, i'll check in and see how yours is doing.

Right on thanks for watching, should be gettin started with some pics some time this week!

I stopped by your journal and things are looking really nice, I like your setup. I'll be checkin in on that also. Good Luck!

So a month and a half later, I'm finally germinating my seeds. :-P I had to wait because I went on vacation, and was kind of hesitant to start because it's getting hotter and I have no real ventilation. But I decided it's better to try and fail than to not try at all. I'm excited to see what happens.

A couple things in my setup have changed since I first posted.

My local garden store ran out of FF Light Warrior soil. They were selling it for WAYYY cheaper than online prices, and that's without the over-size shipping charges, so that was kindof a bummer. But I decided to just get some organic seed starting Jiffy-mix from K-mart. Should work out okay.

Also I decided not to get a duct fan because I figured it wouldn't be neccessary. I'm going to have my closet door wide open while the lights are on and I'll have a couple circulating fans to hopefully get some fresh air in there. It sucks that I cant have any exhaust but I've seen this idea work before.

Oh, and also, I just found out that two of the cfl's I bought about a month and a half ago don't work right, and it's too late to take them back :wall:, so I'll only be using 2. I'll just have to put them under the MH sooner than I had planned.

I put the seeds in distilled water at about 8:30 tonight (4/24) and put them in a dark place. So my first grow has officially started :hump: oooh yeaaa. Let's hope it's a smooth ride from here on.

Fortunately, both seeds cracked. Pretty much at the same time.
They cracked within 24 hours but I left them in another 24 til they had a small taproot.

I planted both seeds at like 9:30 tonight, 2 days after I started germination.

I put them in a relatively dark place. I couldn't use my closet because there is currently a Bubba Kush plant vegetating in there (not mine). I just have them in a dark corner of my room and have just been leaving the lights off. It's not very fun but oh well shouldn't be long.

Does anyone know if light is a serious issue while waiting for seeds to sprout?
I always hear to put them in a dark place and I think it has something to do with the root developement but will it be really bad if I just have a little light from my tv and stuff?

Well anyways, I'll post some pics as soon as they sprout. The decription of the Red Dragon says they arrive 'almost instantly' so we'll see about that. I'll also get some pics of that Bubba Kush that's gonna be in my closet until its ready to flower. It's a pretty nice looking plant and has quite a recovery story.

Peace out.

I put my seeds under a cfl, some light wont hurt you. welcome back also :) most important thing is they need to be warm and humid..

So I woke up today to see the both my seeds have sprouted. Very niiiiiceeee. :hump: I put them under the light now and they're just gonna go on the 18/6 schedule with the Bubba Kush. I put it under the light at about 9:45 a.m. and it goes to it's dark schedule at 1:00 p.m. and back on at 7:00 p.m. so at 7:00 is when it will officially start its vegitating cycle. I made a stupid mistake with the snow white and sort of straightened it out because it looked like it was trying to 'make a U-turn' and it was right after I just read that seeds will do that if they detect light too soon or something. Maybe it was, but it probably wasn't. I just made a real newbish mistake and hopefully the poor thing isn't too shocked and stressed.

Here are some pictures, my digital camera sucked for the closeups so I just used my phone.

Remember the Snow White is in the rockwool and Red Dragon is in soil.

So tonight the roots of my Snow White we're just barely poking out of the starter cube. I put the 4" cube in PH'd tap water 24 hours earlier so perfect timing :) So now it's in the 4 inch cube. I don't have any previous grows to compare to but it seems like these babies are growing pretty fast. I think they are some good genetics. Here's what they look like after 3 days. I'm really happy with how things are turning out so far, hopefully I can keep this going.

So we're now starting the 5th day and the Red Dragon is doing fantastic. It's really perky and just looks happy to be alive.

The Snow White on the other hand, is pretty droopy. I think this may be because of over-watering because I wet down the rockwool pretty good before I put it in the 4 inch cube that had been soaking in water for 24 hours. The starter cube hasn't seemed to dry out at all since I put it in there so it's making me wonder if this could be because of over-watering.

Or maybe I'm being too paranoid and it's just a little more droopy because it's an indica dominant strain?

I'm really not sure, but if it is over-watering is this something it can bounce back from easily?

What do you guys think?

Looks ok to me actually.. Its hard to tell much when they are that small. I have about 8 lil seedlings going that size atm but mine are in soil. Ive never played with that rockwool stuff.

Thanks for the input man, so far you're the only one helping me on this thing, I appreciate it.
When I look at the picture it actually doesn't look too bad it only looks bad next to the RD haha that thing is really perky. Hopefully this isn't a problem.

And I'm thinking I like soil more than the rockwool but we'll see once I get it into the DWC. It's nice to have both, this is just one big learning experience. :)

Hey dude

I just wanted to mention.... don't top the snow white...it doesn't respond that well :peace:

Really? I had planned on topping it, and I read in someone elses SW journal that they "LOVED" being topped? haha so now I don't know what to do.
What node did you top at? And how exactly did it not respond well?

And thanks for the suggestion.

lol yah... lots of opinions to ponder... I'm not going to do it again because it's a really compact plant...it doesn't stretch/grow that wide. so when its topped the two stems grow really close to each other...i would have been better off w/ one central cola. the bubblegum that i got from nirvana responds extremely well to topping... it pushed growth on the bottom...the SW didn't respond like that at all. you can see the difference in the pic 2.jpg
