Lawyers for Edward Snowden have filed a lawsuit to seek guarantees that Norway will not extradite him to the US if he visits to receive an award.

Mr Snowden is a former National Security Agency analyst who leaked secret US surveillance details.

The US authorities have already asked Norway to extradite him to face espionage charges.

Mr Snowden, who lives in Russia, is to receive the Ossietsky freedom of speech award in November.

His lawyers said if he were extradited to the US, it would be "a foregone conclusion" that he would be convicted and jailed.

Mr Snowden is due to receive the Ossietzky Prize, for "outstanding efforts for freedom of expression", in Oslo.

The Norwegian law firm Schjoedt filed the lawsuit to "get legally established that Norway has no right to extradite Snowden to the US".

Hallvard Helle, the lawyer representing Mr Snowden, told Reuters: "US authorities have already asked that Snowden will be extradited to the US if he was to arrive in Norway."

Mr Snowden left the US in 2013 after leaking to the media details of extensive internet and phone surveillance by US intelligence.

His information made global headlines when the Guardian newspaper reported that the NSA was collecting the telephone records of tens of millions of Americans.

Mr Snowden is believed to have downloaded 1.7 million secret documents before he left the US.

Although some consider him a traitor for his revelations, many others around the world say he is a champion of civil liberties.

In the US he faces charges that could put him in prison for up to 30 years.

He has been granted asylum in Russia.

Mr Snowden has said that he is willing to be extradited to the United States if the federal government guarantees he will get a fair trial.

I like Snowden but think he should ask himself what is more important..the award or his freedom?

Seems a no-brainer to me.

I agree freedom or EGO..?

just last night we were discussing the same with the usa candidates ..?

Help me out here Schuylaar, if Cruz and Bernie know they are out of the race

Why are they still in it, is it not better to admit your loss, and align ur self with your party winner

than keep beating the same drum, proving to your voters that you are just in it for the 'ride'

tho a foreigner I'm a Bernie supporter

grown weary of seeing so many American students dominating the cheap euro universities

Did you understand my post?

I dont care what it is called.

This year I had to fill out a form proving that I had paid for healthcare. If I had not provided this mandatory form I would be charged a fine.

Which part of that is government NOT controlling my life?

Universal healthcare is redistribution of wealth through healthcare services. It is socialist and has nothing to do with our representative republic, nor the responsibilities defined in the constitution for the government.

I have tried to step away from party politics and try to reach you on even a basic issue level but you refuse to agree on anything probably on some principal you have.

If you are unwilling to even admit the most basic point then there is no point even attempting to have a discussion with you.

I will simply laugh and mock you while I make myself wealthy like the government never could and watch you just get more angry and bitter as the days go on because you refuse to be the captain of your own destiny.

If you were the slightest bit wealthy, you wouldn't be complaining about taxes or fines

Who do you think you're kidding?
