I have wondered the same thing, since they opened the Bonnet Carre Spillway. That one actually seemed more focused on saving a specific location, Cairo. I believe opening Morganza is different. Not doing so threatens not only NOLA and BR. It would put at risk the entire levee system south of BR. It is heartbreaking to watch, but I have come to understand the necessity of it.
