I don't get too hung up on grams per watt. Why? Because that's not the most important aspect of growing.
I don't care as much about quantity as Quality. All my patients have multiple sources for their medicine. Why do they always come to me? Quality! I grow some of the best 100% organic meds on Earth. Don't get me wrong, yield is very important, but not at the cost of quality. Don't measure success based on grams per watt but on flavor, high and medical value. If you ever had the chance to smoke some of my medicine you would understand. Think of it like this...let's say you want to buy some medicine. One source has the most pot, while another source has the best pot. Which would you buy?
Check this out... I speak at Hempfest Seattle every year. I sit down with the best growers in the world and discuss growing methods and techniques. No one really brags much about grams per watt anymore. We do talk a lot about genetics though. Why genetics? Because after 35+ years of growing I learned that it all comes down to genetics. What works best for pain, nausea, insomnia, etc...
First focus on getting some killer strains. I recommend Kandy Kush, Stacked Kush, Purple Wreck and Tahoe OG to start with. Fill half your room with the Kandy Kush and you won't be sorry.
Sit down and write down your goals. What do you want to do? I wanted to grow the best quality medicine on Earth. I have the quality so now I'm focusing on finding what works best for what ailments. I don't run a for-profit business. All my medicine is used to help people so I don't have to focus on maximizing profit. I guess that's the true joy of having a non-profit grow. I base my success on helping people not making money.
One more thing...There are many methods of growing and they all work. Don't get hung up on techniques and methods. Remember, focus on genetics first, technique second. If that means starting with soil and using Subcool's super soil mix then so be it. After you perfect the classic methods of growing then go try some hydro.
Why did I go back to soil after so many years of Aero/Hydro? One hit of my medicine you would understand. At the same time I understand that some people live in crowded neighborhoods and apartments. You can't be seen hauling 50lb. bags of soil in and out of your apartment (duh if you do). That's when hydro makes total sense. Can you run multiple patients in one grow? Then choose something like ebb and flo, Aero, NFT that use more plants. If you can only have a few plants then grow DWC or coco.
Good luck everyone!
