I am aware that there are two kinds of communism: Socialism (think Stalin), and Fascism (think Hitler) ... and they hated each other. Socialists and Fascists don't 'get along'.
Now, we can (and should) mix Socialism and Democracy and end up with a hybrid Democratic Socialist form of government. Which is what we have now.
A Democratic Socialist gov't allows citizens to own private property, and benefit from that ownership (income), but they tax it heavily and provide social programs like food stamps, roads and bridges and police and courts and all the trimmings of a civilized society.
What we are arguing about right now is HOW MUCH socialism to mix into the gov't we currently have. The new American commies want to go all in -- something like France, or Germany.
