SOG method (sea of green)

In the 90's, I grew Jack Herer SOG under fluorescent shop lights. I took my clones off the mother plant, and put the clones directly into flowering. I grew in 3.5 inch square pots, using BX Promix as a medium. I was getting 5 to 7 grams per plant. When I do the math, now....I was getting 500-700 grams per square yard, or 65 or so grams per sq. ft.! I had a perpetual grow, so I was harvesting 24 plants every 2 weeks.

I fugured the math like this:

in a 36"x36" are, I can get 100 plants using 3.5 inch sq pots. 5 to 7 grams per plant would give me 500 - 700 grams.

The watering became a hassle. Especially because I had so many plants in different stages of floweing. I was only able to leave it unattended for 36 hours....so I stopped. I put the mother outside and got 11 ounces off her. The pic is my profile pic.

Ideally, I would like to start a grow thread...but I am too busy right now. I live in a 192 square foot cabin, so my space is extremely limited. I have seedlings of Hollands Hope, SilverHaze x skunk1, and a Oaxacan Sativa started. I also have access to ASuperSilverHaze x SourDiesel and Northern Lights.

The process of sexing seedlings, and producing a mother that is capable of giving a lot of clones in one cutting is time consuming, but once done I want to put 100 clones, at one time, into flowering. A 3 x 3 grow area will produce a pound of weed.....and you can do that every time you take 100 clones.

Quick research shows that for $600, you can set up a fast, professional grow space which will return a pound of herb....every 100 clones. Lights, tent, fans, filters....

I am sitting looking at a perpetual tree or a sog. I am thinking around the 64 sog or six trees. Same space really, I have a 4x4 tent that I can get any table for easy. I want a sog so bad but every time I think about it I decide I must be an idiot if lower plant number can get me that same amount.

Persuade me that a 64 plant sog is better than six five gallon trees in a drip system. I would do the sog in ebb and flow probably in hydroton in one gallon grow bags.

It is the legal thing. I am medical but i love to smoke and even more than that grow and 64 little plants makes me smile. I just experimentally did a lollipop in a one gallon and I got a half ounce of a few big buds, but I burned them all with ozone so I know I am pushing a 20-30 gram mark with this strain.

I am still vegging out new mothers of some killer strains I got so i sit around all day almost buying a another tray for a sog before I remember to jsut stay legal. I hate that. Pics of sogs make me drool.

Hi Tea Tree....I love clones. While they are not identical in their final form, they are uniform enough to make a grow a little easier. There is soooo much info to sort through that I have found it nearly impossible to find exactly what I am looking for. My grow was under shop lights, maxed out as far as cramming of as many as humanly possible into my shelves. They were all of the same light spectrum....maybe 3000K, and barely enough lumens. I actually flowered at 13/11 vs. 12/12 just to allow a bit more photosynthesis.

I have no idea what hydroponics, and hps lighting could do to this style of growing.....who knows, maybe I just stumbled across the perfect combination of elements by luck! I didn't use any nutes....100% organic in the BX Promix. Maybe the lack of nutes, minimal lighting, and other elements limited root growth enabling me to grow in 3.5 inch pots.

Does anyone else cram so many plants per square foot into their SOG? That's what I want to find out.

In a 4 x 4 area...OMG. that's 169 clones! Well.....how many mothers are you vegging, again?....LOL I would really like to try an ebb and flow system packing in that many clones. Straight off the mother into cloning. No vegetating.

I have a 4'x8' tent with a 600 HPS. I have a 3'x3' table with 20 clones in 6"square buckets. I took the clones straight into flower after rooted. I must say, this is my first grow but I think I will veg for a week before I flower next time to give them some height. Im not happy with the way they look.

Also do any of you know anything about foilar sprays? I am using an ebb and flow and I read somewhere that you should spay flowering plants with a foilar spray. Do any of you know anything about this? I am using botanicare Pure Blend grow and Bloom. I als have the hydroplex. Is it worht the money to use Liquid Karma as well? just a newbie looking for some advice!!! any tips will be greatly appreciated!!!

Any nute schedules I have seen all include Liquid Karma with the Pure Blend Pro

I'm currently doing a SOG grow in an Aeroflo2 system. 120 sites / plants. Clones are mostly GDPurple with a few Master Kush. So I have 4 lights (2 at 600W and 2 @ 1000W) and 120 plants. The tubes are 6' long, and have 10 sites per. A total of about 23 square feet for 60 plants on each res. Half of the clones I started with were mite-infested, and it took them a little longer to get healthy and establish their roots, so I gave them 2 weeks to veg, and just turned them. They range from 6 to 8 inches right now. Wish me luck! I'll let ya'll know how it goes.

Here's an option to SOG/SCROG, a simple low stress training method that ties the stem of the plant to the bucket rim. Growing medium yield strains like Kali Mist, Bubblegum, Jillybean, etc I yield about 3 liters of 4 week cured bud per plant, 12 plants under a 600 watt light and a light mover, 8' x 3' garden, 25 watts HID per square foot. 15 minutes a day care during flower for the whole garden.

.

.

Crop Circle Of Bud

I do CCOB, like an inefficient scrog without the screen but the plants are movable. I top my plants once; veg each side of the stem to 22" in a 6" pot; transplant to a 5 gallon pot on an angle; bend the stems around the bucket rim. The branches grow up and the stem acts like a hydro tube feeding each small cola.

The stems virtually stop growing when they're bent horizontal, so I have to veg the plants so they will bend all the way around the 38" bucket rim. A single 38" stem is thicker and harder to train; two 22" stems crossed at the bottom and following the natural curve of a topped plant will train much quicker and easier.

This is a 1 stem Kali Mist at 35" and a 2 stem Flo (18" & 19"). The stem is much thicker and more difficult to bend and train. We need to get the stem around the 38" of the bucket rim to get as many branches as possible, so two thinner, shorter stems are much easier. The stems virtually stop growth and stretch when bent horizontal, many more branches than a vertical plant of the same stem length. The Flo trained in about 15 minutes and the Kali Mist took days.

Flo - Kali Mist

.

This Bubblegum's stems weren't crossed and took over a week to train. If crossed I could have done it in a few hours.

A Flo (left) and a Bubblegum. The Flo has another week or three, the Bubblegum should harvest in the next week. The Flo is a knarly plant, twisty leaves, small hard buds. This is my second time around for the Flo, the last hermied and I burnt it with Dutch Passion Penetrator. The smoke was so beautiful I had to run it again, this time just a few pre flower pods and bananas on the lower nodes. I picked them off and the plant has been perfect since.

.

The Bubblegum (right) is going to be my best producer ever, of Bubblegum. I should get 12+ cups of cured bud.

.

The single stem Kali Mist from above on the left; on the right a Kali Mist grown with 4" of height above the bucket rim.

.

"What do you mean when you say the stems are crossed?"

Bend them so the stem on your left goes to your right and the stem on your right goes to your left - they'll circle the bucket rim in different directions. The two stems of a single topped plant develop a bowed leg stance and the natural curve circles the bucket easiest if we cross the stems and go the other way - otherwise we have to bend against an already developed curve.

Here's a series of pictures for crossing the stems. The plant is re-potted from 6" pots to 5 gallon buckets - at an angle - to make bending around the rim quicker and easier.

The bucket is a DIY air pruning bucket from a thread linked below. Works fantastic.

i have been reading up on this sog grow post

https://www.rollitup.org/hydroponics-aeroponics/6592-get-harvest-every-2-weeks.html

He stated this"All branching, pretty much everything on the lower 1/3 of the plant, is snipped off in about wk 2 & 3"..

Im curious if thats 2-3 weeks in is 2-3 weeks into flowering or if thats including the clone time....Why im asking this is because im wondering if i should Do this to my Just flowered plants. Im 4 days into flowering and i would love to do a sog grow (for less clutter, bigger nugs, etc), but not sure if it would make my yield less....

I have already veged these plants for a month.

Should i clip 1/3rd of the bottom of my plants or should i just leave them as be?

Hi all, I too have been looking into this SOG method. I have a closet that I veg in and a grow tent for flowering. From all that I have read so far I will be placing 12 clones into a 2 X 4 tray in 1 gallon grow bags. I hope I get the results that I would like. Not sure how much I would yield from this method. Anyone out there care to estimate what I might yield? Always open for advise. My last grow I yielded 3 oz from 4 plants but I topped them and vegged them for over a month. I am on a tight budget so I am using CFLs.

This SOG does look very promising. Like a couple others here I fall asleep thinking about how I can get bigger yields. Will hope for the best.

Oh yea I also read that the bottom stems and leaves should be pruned to allow for better air flow. Also since the top canopy will be blocking out the light wouldn't you want to clip those off so the plant is not constantly trying to heal dying stems. Please if I am wrong about this advise me as to what is correct. Thanks
