I like to keep it simple and get a good basic soil as my base, I actually just made a mix a few weeks ago Im going to use on the grow I just started (indoors but I also did outdoors)

if your growing in your own back yard or field you should take a soil sample and PH test it and see if it might be a good idea to add/spread some Lime (if you have a acid soil)
stuff like Lime/mearl kelp meal and seaweed is nice stuff to add to a soil

when I grew outdoors I started them indoors under some T8 fluorescent light a month or so before I was planning to plant em out (when I was sure night frost was history)
I keepd them in cups or tiny pots in a normaly seedling soil and only useing water (in my case rain water as I did collect it)

once the wether was good I planted them out in the grow i had prepared in some 1x1x1 ft holes full of my own soil mix, I also removed all other growth in a 3ft radius around each plant so it did`t have to compete for light/food and so it did`t catch any deceases or Bugs from other plants

make sure they are in a place where they get +5 hrs of direct Sun a day
