SOS. Expert opinons please on adding N later in flowering

Good morning growers,

I have a LA Choc female plant @ day 47 of flowering. The plant is quite big and by all appearances eating through the energy reserves in the lower fan leaves for the past several days . Now getting toward the end of week 7, some of the leaves at the top half are beginning to yellow as well. Qst is : would a shot of N give much need food to carry her to the end , or will she be ok with just floweing nutes for now. I plan on flushing for last week or so. I guess I am worried that the whole plant will rapidly decline and dry out before the end of flowering , which by my reckoning will be approx 10-14 days from now. To give you all a better idea of how things look . The plant is 5.5 feet and imagine the bottom fans are are yellowed ( in a good way , not def by any means) the top cola leaves are turning light green up to around the very top 6 inches which are still looking full and green .

Does anybody know what are the advantages to having a plant full and green in particular to fan leaves late in flowering . Does it indicate the plant is more healthy than say for instance a plant showing yellowing throughout the fan leaves at same point of flowering ? . Would they both have similar yields ?

She should be fine towards the end of flowering the plant is eating the nutrients from the leaves hence why they turn brown and fall off sometimes don't anyway just continue your regular feeding schedule through flower hope I could help good luck

Bump up the N if she is lacking.. bump it up twice if you need to.. I find a few good doses of an all purpose in between my bloom feedings throughout to the end, to provide great benefit.

Follow your nutrient feeding chart. All mari jane nutes have a feeding schedule that tells you what the mix is for the plant at each week. Now in your flowering time you did remember to not start the flowering days the first week in 12/12 right? You could your flowering time at week 2 in 12/12 as day 1. The plant should yellow out at end of flower like around week 6 or 7 in an 8 week strain little later in longer flowering strains.

Thanks everyone. You know the funny thing is that I have been following FF feeding schedule to a tee . I have been very careful to not overfeed or overwater . All is going well with absolutely no defs noticeable at any time of veg or flowering. That is a first for me . I would have had overapplied N before and had other nute lockup problems. This time all is looking good just trying to figure how much N is needed to take her to the end. Would a final shot of N at this point improve things any ?. Is the plant in the final stages now so any more N would just have any difference?

10 days it probably wont make much difference (look out for the flush crowd.. heh)..

One thing I found most helpful is NEVER apply bloom foods until WELL into onset of flowering.. often some people swap over to bloom foods before the thing has blooms to feed and start a slow road to N deprivation..

If you followed the FF nute schedule which is the nutes I prefer using then as long as you stick to that your good. I have used FF for many years with my strains and I have learned I can push my indicas to much higher levels then the charts as the charts give a good base to follow then after dozens of grows with strains you learn to push and watch.You don't want to much nitrogen in the mix at the end which around I think week 4 or 5 the chart shows a dose of Nitrogen being upped for the last weeks then it drops off again as this triggers the flowering characteristics with the upped Phos and potassium with low N imitating the natural flows of the outdoors during seasons. Extra nitrogen can make the plant get leafy, have a weird taste when smoked and give you extra pops and crackles when smoking. Stick to the chart levels and your good.In the last week you ll be flushing anyways to clean out the nutes all together which will make yellow leaves show even more.

This caught my eye. What I picture is nitrogen but this might point to Calcium also. Most of these nutrient lines can be lacking calcium and/or magnesium when it comes to cannabis. Some strains are monsters. With only a couple of weeks left I would not worry but maybe next run start a cal/mag supplement around the third week and see if it helps later in the cycle. Nitrogen is always blamed when yellowing happens and it is not always the case. Good Luck JAS

Good info guys. From the flush crowd and non flush crowd alike . lol.........next time I am going to up the N rate frequency until a few weeks into flowering . I may have been underfeeding on the N to be on the safe side when I switched to 12/12. ......Has anybody had a plant at harvest where the fan leaves were more or less intact and green >.....is this a good thing ?

I use a base nute from start to finish of 6-3-8.

Alcan...I answered some of your questions on my "Your Opinion..." thread. Also, what I do is go into 12/12 at 1/4 strength on nutes. I increase the level over time based on what I am seeing in the plants. Throughout 12/12, I do a veg feeding every 3rd nute feeding, which gives them some "N". It has worked great for me the past 30+ years and it shows in the end. When you see those yellow leaves show up, pull them. Good luck dude.

You have good powers of deduction JonnyA. About 4 weeks ago I noticed the beginnings of what I now think as Cal def in one of the lower fan leaves. This problem did not get worse and was just confined to that individual leaf. I did check some pics on Cal def and my leaves are not speckled or burnt like what I have seen on the photos. From what I have heard now on this thread it is just the plant eating itself and sucking the big fan leaves dry.

Critical+ and fruity chronic juice.

6 weeks of 18/6 with 64 days of 12/12.

Total dry harvest was 427g from my 400w.


Smoke is clean, no snap crackle or pop, ash is grey/white.

Grown in coco and I don't flush BUT I don't over feed.

Dude you got almost a pound off that 400w light of yours. The most I ever harvested was 9oz dry from a SSH grow some years back . Now I gotta check your grow thread in more detail and see what you are doing to get those big yields. I have a 600w now and want to get to a pound or even a little under for my future grows.

Grow before that one was 439g dry.


There really isn't much to getting numbers like mine.

Great environmental control, good feeding regime with some plant training.


Obviously genetics plays a vital role too.
