Yo Subby my man. Although myself being "rather late to the party" and not being able to pick up a pack of Sputnik back in the day the strain rather intrigues me. I know TGA does not produce Sputnik anymore for retail sale but seeming as though it is featured in your book "Dank: the Quest for the Very Best Marijuana: A Breeder's Tale" I thought I'd ask a few things about the strain and it's future if any.
Browsing around and doing my homework I read this quote from a very well respected grower amoungst the online community.." I've grownSputnik 1.0 before (Black Russian x Apollo 13), and I loved it. It had some minor purpling, really beautiful resinous buds, and an exotic black pepper smell. It didn't yield terribly well, but it was still one of the top plants I've grown (JTR also makes that list)."- ITeachYourKids
Realizing these are internet forum comments and not exactly always factual statements I didn't take his comment too seriously untill I read something like that again in another post "Oh man, how I wish I had kept clones of that sputnik plant. Gonna say it: best plant I've ever grown." -ITeachYourkids.
When someone says something like that it really makes me think. That is a profound statement... The Best? Huh. I want the best... so... My questions..
Was Sputnik dropped so you could concentrate more on Apollo13? I read Sputnik was created using A13. The lineage is A13 x Black Russian if I am correct. I am only so fascinated with the strain because a couple years ago I picked up a pack of seeds called "Space Princess" from another breeder and that was labeled as Sputnik 1 (White Pheno) x Cinderella 99. After growing her out and getting what appeared to be a 50/50 pheno of both parents I was most pleased and it may be one of the best strains I have ever sampled in my short history of growing these past few years. It took on a creamy berry taste with a sugary candy smell and a hint of menthol like stride berrymint gum. Was very happy I kept a cut.
Since then I have collected and obtained seeds from various sources... obtained both Sputnik 2.0 and Sputnik 2.0 x Black Russian. I really hope to get a more Sputnik like Phenotype and be able to treasure it in my collection.
Was thinking for my very first breeding attempt to perhaps cross my Space Princess lady to a select male from my Sputnik 2.0 beans and see what I get.
Being an avid grower of TGA over the past few years and really loving all that you do I also should say that I have been very happy with everything from Apollo13BX,Chernobyl, SpaceJill, SpaceDawg and more. This quest of mine for Sputnik is personal and rather fun. Just wondering if it will ever come back in another shape or form. Either way Sub.. thanks for the great work and dedication to making so many of us smile. Love "The Weed Nerd" btw. That pile of Bloodwreck hash you were rolling thru your fingers looked amazing.
