ssper soil 60 days no white top layer?

umm yea did the thing mixed it waited a week mixed again added water the whole 9 and its been 60 days in temps rangings from 65 to 90 do i need it to go longer to be active or did i do something wrong?

Did you try adding some extra myco's, re-mixing, watering, and let it sit again?

I dont have any white layer on mine ether, and the ammonia smell of the roots organic is getting worse, ,, When i used happy frog and promix i got lots of white on top, but ever since i swithed to Roots organic I have been chasing my tail trying to grow a simple plant. I tryed a new bacth with roots organic and it smells the same, so Junk it and I am going Back to useing happy frog. (used happy frog super soil, is working better for me than New roots orginic super soil. I am going to give it one more shot to see if i can get this soil to come alive

If the fishy smells of the fish bone and the beefy smells of the blood meal have been replaced by a rich, earthy smell, you're on the right track. Never smelled ammonia in mine. Sure you didn't over wet it? Might have gone anoxic.

How long does it take for the smells to get changed away? Mine doesn't smell bad but it does still have those smells....

the roots organic smells like ammonia out of the bag, so when i mixed my super soil up, I under wet it, it anit even that wet, It is just that nasty smell that roots organic has ( cat piss smelling/ cleaner ) I followed subs directions 100% $25 abag Roots organic x 8 = $200
of GARBAGE, not to metion the dry ingredantes.

25 dollars a bag where the fuck do u get ur soil that's twice as much as it should be, I just bought 20 bags of roots for 250 after tax, and it doesnt smell like ammonia at all, it smells like manure.

I live in michigan, and I even have to drive 30 miles to get the stuff. $25 plus tax. they want $27 for fox farm light warrior, $40 for a bale of pro-mix. the happy frog and ocean forest they have smells earthy and like a foerst or some shit.

I swicthed from useing happy frog to Roots organic, because every one on here raves about the stuff. but any plant i planted in it, or top dress with root organic has got sick as hell . it reecks right out of the bag. it is like it is dead soil, and any thing it touches is dead too. maybe the Hydro store ripped me off and gave me junk soil???

25$ a bag? your getting ripped off, i pay 18 locally. i use roots for my soil and everything works out great.

i also live in michigan, southeastern michigan.

Sounds like something went wrong with that load of roots on it's way east. Mine smells nice and earthy out of the bag. No ammonia odor.

Maybe shipping conditions ducked it up? Who knows? I never tried roots but just like fix farm soils everybody has something different to say. I like both ocean forest and happy frog. I use Kellogg's patio plus for my supersoil and Ffhg or ffof for the base. They're loving it so far.

I wouldn't worry too much about the white layer. Dirrtyd taught me just to apply mycorrhizae to the root ball when planting. The micro herd will handle the rest.

I've never had a problem with Roots...always smells fresh and clean no bugs ever and it's only like 12$ for 1.5cf...can't really complain about that.

Damn! your hydro shop is a bunch of crooks. I can get a bag of roots for about $17 w/tax

I have never had a problem with Roots and it never smells bad, bet there shipment got soaking wet and spoiled being in the plastic bags not being able to breath/air out... as others have said you are getting ripped on the price too here its $18 a bag walk in price ($14 with my discount)

You know I feel like this maybe the time to mention that making, and amending your own soil is easily done. Coco, compost, Alaskan humisoil, fish meal, bat guano, etc...
Even though it can be a pain in the ass to scrounge up the money to make your own soil. It's totally worth it, and you find yourself on strange adventures. Like driving in the mountains of Colorado collecting a set aside manure pile. If you have the time, you can learn to dial in your soil, making it easily amendable and reusable. Reduce, reuse, recycle. A well neglected campaign that teaches you the meaning of resources. Now all I have is an hour long workout mixing soil in giant tubs a few times a month, and it's the best soil I've ever had. Keep feeding the soil companies, but I save myself a gym membership and make dank.

P.S. Don't worry if you don't see a white layer, do worry if you smell ammonia, you need to flush out the soil and amend with dry clean soil (coco will do). As long as you smell fresh earth; chocolate, mineral dead fish smell (not so fishy more earthy), fire pit, and there should be a mild undertone of mushroom smell. Aside from the general wet ground smell. I wouldn't worry if you don't see webs, if the colony is truly diverse it prevents any monoculture until the plant is in the mix, then depending on the nutrients it wants to absorb it will "cling onto" certain colonies, temporarily increasing their numbers. I don't see white webs forming until my plant is interacting with the soil. Maybe that's just me?

that is Mycorrhiza fungus.....nice!....thats what you are looking for...
