Start counting weeks from first white pistils showing, not 12/12 switch?

Hi,

I read the pinned Trichomes & harvesting post.

In one of the comments I read that ppl are counting the flowering weeks not from the 12:12, but from the first pistils.

I know that this is only a general guided line and this is the reason I am checking few factors include Trichomes, but that add 10+- days to my grow plan.

What do you think guys?

Yes but I need to know then to change nutrition, I already stopped feeding the GSC (flower time according to nirvana is 7-9 weeks) and 8 weeks passed since 12:12 flip.

The biology of the plant says that flowering begins once the plant has finished the transition period, “budding stage” technically, and has began to form flowers. Flowering takes time to initiate. The plant needs to build up hormones and switch it’s internal systems to accommodate the new stage of growth.

Many indoor growers count from 12/12 flip, but that is only because “it’s easier” to count from one set day rather then actually observing the plant growth. However if you want to really know what point in life your plant is in you need to observe what it’s doing, not try to tell it what you think it should be doing.

I stopped counting days or weeks years ago. I feed the plant based on its observable needs and harvest when the plant has finished flowering AND RIPENING. There is no need to worry about trying to follow a feed chart that was designed in someone else’s grow with different plants. It’s all just loose guidelines, just like breeder flowering times. There are so many variables in a grow that paying any attention to flowering times is really pointless.

Cannabis is just a plant like many others. It’s not magic. Here is a basic chart of plant growth cycles showing each stage.

You don't need to wait for pistils to flip to 12/12.
Just decide by the size of the plant and tent.

I am not familiar with your strains, but mine (WW + GSC) stretch twice the height.
Wait one more week and flip.

I waited 8 weeks and they are too big for my tent, next time I will flip after 6 weeks.

Thanks I topped one and LST the other to try to maintain the height that’s really the goal. Thanks for the response

You can switch them whenever you want. The plant won’t begin flowering until it has reach maturity though so its possible it could take a few weeks to start seeing bud formation.

Thanks for the response, are you familiar with these strains I started with autos this is my first photo grow that I can actually supervise in a tent I know they are doing well I’ve had to strip them twice already and the next mornings after the strip they have bounced back and it seems like they expanded adolescent leave into new fan leaves. It may be the tea I’ve been drinking but I feel like they are ready from what I’ve seen. I have another question. When taking clones do I need to do it before I flip them or can I do it in the first week?

I’m not familiar with your strains sorry. Generally cloning before flipping would be ideal to reduce stress during the transition. However if it was within the first week after flip you probably won’t notice any major difference or issue.

Thanks again. Judging from the pictures that where taken today.. how much of a stretch do you think I will have to go through with them before they stop it’s only 4 feet from top to bottom not counting the pots or the room for the lights and filter. Is it true they stretch 3x their size before they stop or do you think they will make it they have kush genetics heavy

“12/12” refers to 12 hours of lights-on/12 hours of lights-off - a fairly common method of inducing flowering.

It is a change from a different day/night cycle used during the vegetative stage, such as 18 hours of light/6 hours of darkness. Cannabis (non-autoflower) is photoperiod-sensitive, and flowering is induced by a change from longer days to shorter days.

“Counting from 12/12” means measuring the flowering cycle from the change in light schedule, rather than from examination of the plants themselves. It’s a rule of thumb, commonly used.

You could do a little experiment. Treat a couple of your plants like its week 8. Or count flowering time from the day you flipped to 12/12. Stick to your grown plan, and your feeding schedule and chop them on time.

Then add in a little transition time for a few of your plants. Or for those plants, count days flowering from when you first saw pistils. Let those plants hang around for another 10+ days. Run your feeding schedule like you're in week six and a half, right now.

Your 8 week buds should be dried and ready to jar just about the time your 10 week buds are finishing up and ready to be cut down. Keep track of your yield and compare the quality and weight of your short time buds and long time buds.

That way you'll know for reals about how to count days flowering, and if it's worth it to push for 10+ weeks.

I don’t have enough experience with cloning to attempt giving any advice about it: I know there are others here with vastly more to offer on cloning. I will leave it to them, rather than steer out wrong.

You can clone them. They should grow roots quickly, but they may take a while to grow new foliage that looks like normal seedling leaves. It is a perfectly acceptable method of preserving genetics. I do however like working with cuttings from a fully vegging plant; and would suggest trying to take clones before the flip in the future.

Thank you all for your help just finished 6 clones now lets see what happens..lol i have them in a warm window with lots of sunlight, i have to move them at night because i keep my room at 60 degrees lol i will send pics when they start doing something ..LOL thank you for your help.
