I use Pool Shock granules (Calcium hypochlorite).

I mix 17.5g per gallon to make a stock solution. I then add about 25ml of this to my 20 gallon reservoir to get ~ 1ppm residual. If I remember that correctly.

If I don't have stock solution ready I just mix 0.1g to 20 gallons every third day.

Can I just use uc roots
You're free to flush money down the drain if you want to. They are both sterilizing agents containing chlorine. There's tons of mixing instructions and it's very hard do burn anything using chlorine.

I've posted my stock solution recipe in earlier post. You can even simply go by smell. Think of how a chlorinated pool smell. Typical residual is 3ppm for pools.

Most plants tolerate over 10ppm of chlorine. We aim for 0.5-2ppm residual. A container of Poolshock will probably last over 10 years for most growers. I add 2ppm to everything going in the reservoir just as a safe measure.

DWC I use voodoo juice to keep mine clean I bought the smallest bottle I use 2ml per litre. Tap water chlorinated. Roots grow faster in RO. 1/4 strength of nutes keep mine healthy. Change res every 14 days. Haven’t tried longer I’m using AN because it’s easy. But it took me a year to figure out how to use it. Botanicare same 1/4 strength. So far maybe 1/4 worked with different grows. 24 watt fluorescent 2 foot light.

I used to use sodium hypochlorite AKA household bleach. Unscented of course. Never had root issues and it didn't not harm the plants in any way.

I never even heard of pool shock until I read about it on this site. Probably better to use potassium as it's a nutrient the plant uses in larger quantities. But I never had any issues with the bleach. It's such a small amount that you use.

Recirculating through a UV light sounds like it would work. I know the ones made for ponds keep the water crystal clear.

Another thing I would add is a filter. Not too fine, just enough to catch broken roots and dust and dirt and crud. In the bottom of my rez was a few spoons of ...sand? Mix that with a uv light and a cold cement basement floor. bongsmilie

Why is nobody talking about H2O2? RO water and H202 is all you need for a sterile tank and it has the added benefit of releasing o2 into the mix. I wouldn't be adding chlorine or bleach or any of that, when peroxide is so readily available. I stopped buying 12% at the hydro store and went to food grade for cooking and finally found the best source after that which was bulk buying for hair salons. Money wise, you save.. oh I don't know.. a wild speculation, about 1 million percent, give or take. Plus there is nothing better to clean your systems with between grows. When I'm reusing my hydroton I let it all sit in a big tub or the bath, pour in a nice strong solution of H2o2 and let it fizz away for a couple of days. You can then strain off all the crap and you have perfect, clean medium ready to go again.

Sorry man. H202 is the inferior solution. It does not last long in the tank. Also it is 45$ a gallon for the 35%. It would take 2-3 bottles a grow. 100$ + for me to use that stuff per grow. 1lb pool shock was a couple bucks and will last me years!. Not sure how you think h202 is a millions times cheaper than something that literally costs 1 cent a dose.

No no.. you misunderstood me. I meant getting H2O2 that is for salons, is a million times cheaper than using the hydro shop stuff, and a thousand times cheaper than the food grade stuff. I totally agree, using that much h202 is a pita, if you have big tanks.

every time you open your peroxide bottle, you lose some effectiveness when it is exposed to the envirionment.
chlorine is a nutrient for cannabis. nothing is cheaper than shock. like @Failmore said
