Alright Med, I don't get how you think bankruptcy will cause that many jobs to be lost. As it was previously mentioned, the airlines are still in business.

Personally I think bankruptcy would do them some good. It might make those dudes in charge have to sit back and think about where the profits went. Maybe they'll analyze their own greed,

Would someone tell me why the UAW members to make more money than say the4 chicken pluckers? As far as job related injuries the pluckers have it the worst. I watched a blip that showed just what , at least 3 UAW, do for their wage..! of them placed the plastic nose on a car..the other 2 then clipped the clips on either side.. Just that in 101 seconds. The talking head made it sound as if they were runing their tails off..Well..at that rate they're more likely to gain weight. How is that a stessful work place? Back a '84 I worked with a few Michigan winter refugees and we were tslking about the UAW.. Now at that time if you'd worked there two years or more, wait for this... they had 52 paid days off 52..That's 10+weeks.
Now, in some of the contracts the automakers have to build a certain number of cars, even if they can't sell them..Why, for the union. Don't get me wrong, when the unions first came to be they werevery needed organizations but they've gotten cocky because they know that they can shut a business down with a strike. Now is that simply lookink out for the workers, or ,as I see it, simply GREED. When did it go from needing to greeding?

One of the advantages of bankruptcy, is that much deadwood can be removed from the cancerous area like management. In the US management makes up 12% of the workforce while in Germany about 5%, in Japan about 4%, and their companies work just fine.
Why in the Honda and other foreign car plants in this country..which means they aren't foreign is it possible for a car to be built at 600 man hours when in the big 3 plants it's 1200 man hours? It might surprise some to learn that the most EXPORTED car from his country is the Honda Accord...60% of the are exported.
The next time you see a show filmed in South America look at the trucks. The ones that are seen , the standard makes, all look different than what we see on our roads. This is because in other countries a truck is a tool, not something to look cool in. The same for $x$..How many of these massive SUV owners ever use it? Why does anyone need 400hp in a car? The speed limit is what it is..What's the need to do 0-60 in3.5 sec over 5.8 sec? Most people don't have the reflexes to use that..other than to be stupid and hurt others.
As far as future tech, check out the compressed air car from Italy..200 mile per charge. Sure beats the hell outs 40-60 with electric. How's about around town rides? What's wrong with golf cart style vehicles? In some UU countries those go fast adult sized go carts are road legal as they;ll do 65 mph.
Let's face it, the BIGGEST problem in this country..for a large % of the pop is KEEPING up with the Jones.. That is what has flushed this country.

Why rag on the SUV? You buy what you want, and let everybody else do the same. Last time I checked, like guns, the government hasn't banned them yet. Until then, you guys are the Jones's, worried about everybody else.

I don't like SUVs, I was passing them on the interstate last night in the ice and snow in my sebring. I don't understand why people buy them. I can see if your business is to drive off road or if you have lots of off road hobbies. I don't get these people who buy one just to have one. They don't go any better in snow than my front wheel drive car and my car stops better in bad conditions.

What's the need to do 0-60 in3.5 sec over 5.8 sec?
I think it is extreme, the need that is, at least in my case. I'd love to have a car that could do 0-60 in 3.5 seconds. I doubt even my 62 deuce hotrod with 500 HP could do that. Even the best from detroit can't do that. The 600HP corvette is still in the 4 second range. I'm sure they'll get there eventually. The only production vehicle capable of 0-60 in 3.5 seconds is the Capagna T-Rex, a 3 wheeled vehicle, like a 2 seat side by side motorcycle on steroinds. JFYI. In case you haven't noticed I'm a drag racer through and through/

You're right, that anyone can buy whatever they want, that wasn't my point. My point is that in order to keep up appearances people will over spend, then claim the need for more money, when the trick is to spend less. Sure you can have any vehicle you want, but don't complain when it eats gas or the ins goes up. There are sports cars that claim under 4 secs.
I don't understand the need to keep up with the latest trends is all about, other than possible bragging rights.

Yeah, but your handle says it all ... "Anotheroldephart." I'm not sure how old you are but the chances are that I'm older than you. We can still assume by your handle that you are an old fart though. As an old fart, you, like me, have probably discovered that less is actually more.

I drive a 1995 vehicle, by the way. :hump:

uhhh, 62 chevy Nova, latest trends, I don't think so. I havent bought that ZO6 that is the rage, wouldn't mind having it, but it wouldn't be to "keep up with the Jonses" it would be for driving exhiliration. I guess there are "car guys" and regular people that could care less what they drive. I'm a "car Guy" so driving is a pleasure to me, most times, there are mundane tasks that aren't so pleasurable. To Me there is nothing like side by side 1/4 mile drag racing, at the track for sure, Put me in the Jay Leno category without the money. BTW, that ZO6 costs as much as my house, so It's pretty clear I won't be owning one of those. I think Leno Has 2 or 3.

a side note..great internet radie...mvy.org...you'll hear music there that you won't hear anywhere but at the show.

Medicinman.Of course there are all kinds, but you can't tell me hat the vast majority of SUV owners ever go off road, or drive in nasty weather or tackle the Rubicon in their Porsche..although it was quite impressive there, and there's nothing wrong with owning them, but when bucks get tight they bitch they need more money. I say this from hearing it in person.

I'm a car person too, but I don't like cars based on what other people have. I like what I like because I like it. I have no use for an SUV myself. They're too big and bulky, they get low gas mileage, they just aren't my style.

My car is low to the ground, sometimes I can't find it in a parking lot full of SUV's.

As for muscle and power, I'm a Mopar performance girl. I'd love a 1970 T/A Challenger, but lets get real, they are few, far between and very expensive these days. That is the car that makes me drool. 340 six pack, air grabber hood..........

I'm not saying everybody buys to impress, but you'[d be surprised how many do, why else the need to replace every 2-3 years. I drive mine for as long as the repairs are normal..Then I allow it to become someone elses', and then I inherit someone else's through the insurance co.
