streetlights?

How do HPS and MH street lamps do for growing?

People have done it before. Not sure if i would want to jiimy rig a street light and put it in a enclosed space. But hey thats just me. But to answer you question as simple as possible: Yes

ye i thought about just using the bulb. I heard theyr lik 250-400watt. So they would fit in a normall ballast im guessing?

my dad stole a bulb out of a streetlight and tried when i was like 6 he told me. according to him its unadvisable. it does work but u have to have a lot of room b/c the bulb is extremely hot, he quit using it b/c it was cooking his plants.

damn thats what i thought would be the issue. What about smaller ones from golf courses and car parks?

idk i've never heard of somebody using one i'm sure it would work tho but u would probably want at least 5 or 6 feet of space at least. b/c they r not made for growing so they're most likely to put off more heat than u want regardless

a friend of mine claims that the street light bulbs are good for growing

They do get hot.I got a few along time ago with some thought of using them.It depends also on what kind and age pf the light.Alot of the older ones are Mercury Vapor which gives off 40% lumes per watt used then a MH.They reall arent great for using to grow but you could use an new "orange " street light as they are usually MH but you need to have some electrical expirence to wire a plug to it for using.The bulbs will not fit a standard house socket they will be mogul like most grow lights.Usually 250 watt bulbs in them

Those streetlights actually work very well for growing plants, but since you've got to put your plants a couple feet below the lamp, it gets old real fast climbing up there to tend your plants.

lol... seedlessone i do own a 400watt HPS but i cant afford a new light for vegging so i was checking out other options. and filthy i did a 9 month traineeship in marine electrical(240v/DC/12-24volt) so i can do all the wiring easy. thanks for the help. Im still tawn between weather i should or shouldnt do this. Peace

Theres a lot of different street light technologies out there. When I was poking around at the possibility of LED light I found an article on a proposal for a LED street light. Pretty badass (too bad LED's are expensive or id grid them allll over my box)

TBH, why don't you save your pennies and buy 1. As there are hard working citizens that shouldn't have to hear all this. I thought this was a place to grow nice bud, Not rip of the communities lights as some poor fooker got to replace it and i'm sure it's an arrestable offence. No offence tho dude but rethink your plans as you could also bring your grow op on TOP, just saying and think it would be wise DO U?. Hope you sort it out some other way dude
