Super Soil Questions

Hello RIU,

Long time reader, but I usually don't post. I have done hydroponics in the past, ebb & flow, DWC, and drip buckets. I am switching to super soil, mainly because running hydro systems is a lot of work. In my last grow I used kindsoil per I instructions in a 5 gal nursery pot(5 pounds kindsoil in the bottom, the rest was base soil. It was Master Kush under a 600w HPS in a 4x4 tent. Only water, nothing else added. I vegged for about 6 weeks. The results were mediocre at best. Light fluffy buds that shriveled up when curing, no where near the density I normally get. I am now cooking my own batch of subcools super soil to use next time.

My question is what was the problem. The kindsoil only filled the bottom 1/3 of the pot. Was it not enough? Or does kind soil suck? I see most people are using 7 gal pots with super soil, is 5 to small?.

On my next grow I am planning the following
-600w hps
-4x4 tent
-5 gal pots filled 3/4 with subcool super soil
-green crack and God bud
- considering General Organics Bio Bud every other watering, mixed to the light feeding strength.

I am open to suggestions if anyone has any

Yea I don't know why they would only have you fill the bottom 1/3 of your pot with their soil, that seems a little odd. I've been cooking my own soil for a couple runs now and I always fill my entire pot with my soil and my soil only, nothing else. None of this fill 1/3 with super soil and the rest with some other kind of soil, that makes no sense to me....
Personally I would never go smaller than 5 gallon for my final pot size, I have used 7 and 10's before with similar results but with the space I have 5 gals work for me. The difference was minimal imo.
Also, if you're going to use super soil or ROLS soil (which is actually what I use, not any super soil recipe) then I wouldn't add any type of nutes at all, but that's just me.
Never used kind soil so can't comment on that, but I've grown green crack before, and it's a good one, so good choice on that!

*Edit: just want to clarify that my soil already has drainage added (i.e. perlite or rice hulls). So when I say I ONLY add my soil and no other soil I just mean that the only thing that goes in my pots is the cooked soil, which already has everything added, and nothing else

I thought the recommended amount of kindsoil seemed light, but I didn't want to burn....lesson learned. I will try using all super soil in my pot. I will be transplanting established plants from a 1 gal pot with kindsoil mixed in, so I think it should work. Can't wait to try green crack! Thanks for the help!

Edit: the super soil I am making has perlite in the mix for good drainage/ aeration
