supplemental light question

Hello folks, newbie here, i ordered and received Viparspectra 900w internationally (so i can't send it back), which i didn't use yet, (still waiting for auto seeds) it turned out it's not really solid on the red light output, it's gonna be my first grow, Grow tent 48x48x80, now i was almost gonna buy the HLG-600H, which i can't find a single bad review about, but it will cost me around 850+ dollars with shipping, and that's alot of money for me, my question if i add normal 20 watt 3000k LED bulbs i found at the store, would it fix the issue ? there's no grow light bulbs where i live just regular stuff, i'd appreciate any input.

Hi Shpongles,
First you need to determine if your diagnosis is correct. Why do you feel it's weak on red end of spectrum?

And once that's determined...buy a light that specifically fills that need.

I have a 650w LED that's way heavy on reds but weak on white/blue. So I added a nice white CMH 315w to fill that need.

There are loads of inexpensive low wattage extreme red spectrum leds out there....that's what I'd be looking at in your situation.

it has Red :30% Green 20% Blue:50%, most reviews say it's a bit weak for flowering, i have those red light you linked in my basket, but the only problem is if there's something wrong withem if they don't work, i won't be able to replace due to international orders, that's why i thought better to get something assembled and checked before shipping. the Spectra is 900watt but 420 true watts, how many of those red bulbs you think i'll need to fill in the void in 48x48 ?

Its weak because its a 400w light that says it replaces 1000w hps (nonsense), but is only good for a 3x3. Add 150w of 2700k or 3000k and you should be fine in a 4x4.

$700 for a grow light? Not with my money. Throw a 600 or 1000 watt HPS in there for under $200 and call it a day.
that was the plan, but due to digital ballasts screwing with Wifi and radio and how there's a good chance bulbs will be broken or needed a replacement, and electric bill, plus i'll be shipping internationally, so i thought it wouldn't be worth it, n the HLG-600H Quantum Board is 16% more powerful than a 1000 HPS, less energy used ect, with grade a quality buds, there's lights that are similar or inferior and cost 1500 dollars + but i agree it is expensive, specially for first time grower.

That light is not 16% more powerful than a 1000 watt HPS. It's a 600 watt light setup.

i can't link but there's videos of professional growers doing comparisons vs HPS and it yielded more than the HPS.
*This kit will easily replace any 1000 Watt HID using only 620 Watts of power producing a massive 1540 PPF total output! To put this in perspective, a single ended 1000 watt produces around 1250 PPF total. The HLG-600H produces 19% more light than the SE1000 watt with 38% less power!*

That's just marketing verbiage from a manufacturer trying to sell a product. No different than Chevy making a commercial claiming they are better than Ford or vice versa.

I'm not saying it's not a good light and won't grow some killer weed. Just take the marketing material with a grain of salt. They can make all kinds of claims but that doesn't make them true. And for $700 it better be as good as a 1000 watt HPS that you can get for under $200.

dear god, just do your research for the love of goblins, Grand Master Level had a podcast about it, many other growers and testers confirmed that it does exactly what it says.

OK I see your issue. Color temp isn't much of an issue for most casual light bulb users. Find some as red is possible...often labeled warm white. Or maybe a local vendor can special order some that are even more red.

Far as calculating how many you need. Unless you can do the math...you'll just have to eyeball it. I'd think maybe 5 or 6 might be enough depending on spectrum.
Good luck,
JD

I see you found the HPS loyalist in the forum. I had a back and forth with dude about LEDs too... resistance to change is normal though....

You already have a solid LED that puts out good light - a single 80W Warm White CFL if you really really think you need it..... but if you haven't used the light you got you don't know if you really need it do you.....

don't do things to gain forum approval - in the 10 years or so I've been here it's always been a shit show.......

What are you talking about? It's a 600 watt light. I could care less about Grand Master Level and some podcast. GML is trying to sell LED's. I can grow just as good of weed with an HID. FACT. Stop taking everything these salesman say as gospel. I don't need anything from GML. I don't need to watch their marketing videos, I don't need the LED's their selling, I don't need them for anything and I"ll still grow great weed. Referencing a podcast from the manufacturer is not providing proof of anything. Do yourself a favor and learn how to grow the old fashioned way. Youtube is full of slick salesmen pushing their products.

There is no resistance to change. It's stupid to spend $700 on an LED when you don't need to. That light is not better than a 1000 watt HID despite what some guy in an infomercial says.

Heavily red spectrum supplementation.DSCN0928.JPG
270 wall watts gave me 18 O's dried. I've been growing under HID's for 30 years so if you don't think LED's can't perform as well or better than HID's you haven't done enough research on them.

thank you, that's what i'm gonna do, no need to spend extra cash for first grow, need to learn the basics first and i see where i head from there.

Yeah i understand if someone is HPS loyalist, but he reminded me of my x gf, he keeps changing what i say and spit out some shit out of nowhere, no one said HPS is not great or even the best, but just that LED with their latest technology can preform as good or even slightly better, they're expensive i agree, but for the long run it will cost you cheaper, that's why people that do this for a living are changing their HPS to LED, god i hated my x, i didn't go on forums since 16+ years, i forgot there's some people that type for the sake of arguing.
