Switch from Metal Halide to HPS

I was growing four plants under a 400watt metal halide bulb. I was using this for veg. and planned on using HPS for flower. My plants are still in veg. but my metal halide lamp just stopped working out of nowhere (had them on 24 hour cycle). So immediately after the MH died, I changed the bulb to my 400 watt HPS on 18-6 cycle. Do you think that I am going to see any problems because of the sudden change? How far away from plant top should HPS bulb be? I do not have a cool tube or any cooling device besides an air conditioner and a few fans blowing on the plants. Thanks for the help!

you don't have to put them under 12/12 with the hps if you aren't ready to yet . they will still grow fine under 18/6 with hps

is it bad to use a 24" tube fluorescent lamp and an hps bulb in the same garden? My plants are very bushy and fan leaves are huge so none of the lower parts of the plants get light, and I just wanted to know if I can hang the fluorescent without harming something. Let me know.
