Take a chance with bag seed? Or trust the seed sellers?

Is it better to take a chance saving bag seed that you occasionally find -especially if it comes from a really high quality strain? Or should you buy only from reputable seed sellers? The obvious answer would be to say to get them from a reputable seed seller.....BUT....that isn't a guarantee that you won't end up with an inter sex plant or a bunch of males, either! Anything can happen these days and strains seem to be SO hybridized, now, that the possibilities of getting a terrible combination of lineage also increases. All these complex crosses carry a lot of baggage, themselves!

I've been saving a bunch of really nice looking bag seeds from a variety relatively-good stuff that I buy in the rec stores. The seeds are fully developed and I know they will pop.

I'm tempted to devote half of an upcoming grow to bag seed strains just to see what I'll get.

The short answer is you run a higher risk of running into problems with bagseed then from stronger genetics from a reputable seed dealer.

With bagseed, you're almost guaranteeing to grow a plant with hermaphrodite genetics, or else there wouldn't be seeds to start with. It doesn't mean the subsequent plant WILL hermie, it just means that the odds are astronomically higher. Buy from trusted sellers unless you don't mind to get some hermies.

But here's the thing.... When I go to the rec store (or in the past, the dispensary), I always buy the best of whatever there is available. So, I presume these genetics are already considered "proven" by the growers who base the success of their business on them. But, even the best genetics, grown under the best conditions can still produce flowers that end up with seeds in them... So, do those seeds also hold the potential for producing some "top shelf" flowers, albeit a few seeds?

If the trade-off is mediocre flowers that are 100% female, then might it be worth it to go with the rogue seeds that came from genetics that have been professionally chosen by the experts?

Not true always. I’ve grown quite a few strains from high grade and chopped some killer bud that didn’t hermie. However I have also planted bag seeds and have every single one hermie. It’s a crap shoot.

Depends. If seeds are from hermies you get a great chance at hermies. If from nanners you get feminized seeds.

Sorry I should've phrased that a bit better lol, I mean that bag seeds are more likely to carry hermie genes even if the current generation doesn't hermie on ya. But it doesn't mean that the bud will be any less potent or yield be any less. If grown in good conditions, you should be able to grow one without it hermie'ing at all. :)

Ok...At this point, I should clarify...I used the term "hermie" incorrectly. I meant a plant that's grown from bag seed and might throw a few nanners and make a few seeds.

But...Here's what I don't quite get....IF a professional grower, goes out and buys some seeds from a reputable seed seller and then takes those seeds and grows them out.....and a few seeds appear at the end of harvest.....then were those seeds created from genetic predisposition to showing intersex traits? Or, are they the result of a female plant that wasn't going to go down without a fight to make some seeds?

When I didn't know any better, back in the early days of MMJ, I found a seed in an eighth of TGA Vortex....I It was perfect seed. I grew it into a lovely plant.....that plant DID throw a few nanners...but not that bad. Plus, the bud was delicious!

I did the same thing with a bag seed I found in some Dogwalker OG....When that plant flowered, it showed male and female flower parts on all the bud sites! ...and was culled.

I think it IS a crap shoot, too....but maybe only slightly less of a crap shoot than buying from a seed seller these days. I know there have got to be a few reputable sellers out there, but the genetics have become SO convoluted and complex, that I don't see much of a way to keep track of all the genetic traits of all the lineages used. It's not always the sellers fault. It's often the breeder's fault. Any one of those ancestral strains' traits used along the line of a complex hybrid, could suddenly pop up out of nowhere and be to blame for some kind of sexual malfunctioning....right?

Fuck bagseed, for around $10 I get 100% amazing genetic seeeds from Tude, I stick to DNA Genetics, never let me down yet.

There's also the possibility that the seed came from a male that was missed until after it managed to pollinate a pistil or two. Then you likely wouldn't get anything that would herm on you, just a 50/50 chance of male or female.

There's a big investment in time and energy to see a grow through and if I'm going to nurture something for that 12-14 weeks i don't want to cheap out on seed.. That being said i believe that if you buy ten seeds of a particular variety your still gonna find 5 diff phenos. it sure as shit not corn.

The grower knows if he stressed them or not.

Is that the norm these days? Doesn't sound very stabilized. Used to be like 2 or 3

Meanwhile I can’t get half of this fattie Cherry Bomb smoked that I grew from bag seed. One of the biggest tops I’ve ever chopped and it’s kickass bud. Fun to grow. I’ll definitely run this one from seed. I’ve grown some damned good stuff from bag seeds and been rewarded far more times than not.

Yup, back in the early 90's (my high school days) I grew from bag seed religiously year after year because that's all there was around, that's all any of us could get everybody around the world grew bag seed at 1 point year after year after year. Gotta agree with hot rod again. I was rewarded with good smoke way more often than not, like my plants turning Hermie or getting bad smoke. Like grandmama always said with her vegetable gardens growing up, As long as you give it the care love and attention that your plants need they will reward you back. A rough estimate? Outta 10 plants ( Given that they're female) I might have problems out of one maybe 2 of them like stunted growth weird deformities, Hermie, Small yield, or super low THC. Basically if bag seed is all you have, would be a fool not to use it.

My experience after 8 grows with 3 different breeders and mixed into those grows I had 2 bag seeds. None of the breeder gear ever hermied both of the bag seeds sprouted nanners around day 32 of 12/12.
