Taproot brown but growing??

Had this seed lying around in the original container, never opened for about 3 years, in a cool, dark place. Needless to say, I germinated it along with another seed abd one taproot looks fine, the other is the same color as shell, but it's growing at a slower pace, BUT growing. Is it a crap seed or what? It looks strong and healthy from what I can tell, just shell colored. Any insight?

I've planted them both in some soil already to see what happens. This is the first time I've ever seen that and I've grown quite a few times.
