Taproot hitting DWC Reservoir?

I decided to try germinating right inside my net pots above my reservoir in a DIY DWC system. First time growing anything but tomatoes.

Little girl germinated after 3 days, popped her head out, spread forth her cotyledons and had begun growing her first true leaves, all in a span of 12 hours. This seemed quick to me (at least, faster than tomatoes!). Then the very next day, I found a long single root growing out the bottom of the net pot and well into the solution (I'm assuming this is the taproot).

Everything I read said that it should take maybe a few weeks before roots were protruding from the net pot.

Is this indicative of some problem, or have I just underestimated the growth time of cannabis roots? Also, I had planned on having to water the seedling until her roots hit water-- should I stop right now? Or wait for the fibrous root system to catch up?

Well you will you will likely see noticeable growth on a daily basis. When the roots hit the water they go nuts. What are you going to feed it?

EDIT: Btw I never top feed. My thinking is that I want to encourage the plant and roots to find the water.

I wasn't really "top feeding" per se, just feeling the rapid rooter and moistening it with ~1 tbsp of PH'd water early on if it no longer felt damp. But since the taproot has hit the reservoir, I've stopped doing that. Keep in mind that I was germinating in the rapid rooter already set up in my DWC. Didn't use paper towel method or anything, just plopped the seed pointy side down into the rooter, pulled a chunk off the side and plugged the hole with it.

I've got the GH Flora trio, figured I'd start out with the standards and get my footing before I start experimenting. Currently the reservoir is a really light nute solution (I've got tomatoes in there too and didn't want to totally starve them). Basically 1/8th the recommended amount on the bottle. Less at this point as I've been topping off the reservoir with plain PH'd water. Supplemented with a quarter-dose of Superthrive and a full dose of Hydroguard.

So far I've been leaving the light on 24/7, but I'm thinking of switching to a 20/4 schedule.

I personally don't like Superthrive in my dwc buckets and tend to use Roots Excelerator instead, but it sounds like you have a plan and are attentive. I run my lights on an 18/6 schedule in my Veg tent.

I've also heard that some folks prefer Great White to Hydroguard. But as this is my first grow ever I just figured I'd stick with what are considered to be the "baseline" supps and nutes to get a feel for things and then try out adjustments in later grows. I've only got a single cannabis plant in there at the moment as I was honestly expecting to have killed it by this point. Have 15 or so other seeds waiting for when I feel more comfortable.

Also I don't have a grow tent yet-- been growing in just a plain old closet (lucked out and my closets are painted matte white already, including the pole on which I'm hanging the light, all the shelving, and the door). More than one plant and the smell could get out of control. The plan is to have a tent before she goes into flower. First grow is an autoflower Northern Lights x Big Bud that I got as a bitcoin freebie from Attitude. Growing for medicinal purposes, and am planning to grow photoperiod Northern Lights as my primary crop early next year. The autoflower is why I'm running 20/4. My initial research will have me likely growing 18/6 for photoperiods. Though I've read some really interesting stuff about growing at 12/12 from clone, that's something I'd like to test out at a later date.

I just bought a more powerful air pump. The one I was using is only 3 watt 7.8l per min. Going to combine that with a 6 watt 15l per min and hopefully get some serious oxygenation going.

Thanks for all the help!

My first run was a closet grow, so I get you. Totally agree that with autos, your want to do 20 hours of light. Definitley you will want to invest in carbon filter and vent lines. More oxygen is better and so I run the industrial air pumps as well.

Superthrive has a tendency to gunk up roots. Also you will not do any harm using a mychorraza (bad spelling) product like Great White with Hydroguard. If you are attentive you will be fine.

As for 12/12 from clone....it depends on how big you want the plant. If you are doing sea of green with lots of smaller plants, then it works. I do long veg periods and bigger plants on a perpetual basis.

I am happy to help. Feel free to mssg me if you ever have questions. It may take a few days but I will get back to you.

That's DWC,I had 1 tap root that ran to the bottom of my 3 1/2 gallon bucket and then it found its way thru my under current 3/4" tubing to the other bucket in front of the one with the long ass tap root. And with DWC you will see new growth on a daily basis,I have a daily journal per grow it helps out, take measurements every 7 days & change out your Nutes every 7-10 days & only use R.O. Water PH'd @ 6.0 that's my zone.Im 2 weeks into flower right now & when lights come on I can see the new growth daily.ill try & upload a couple of pics.

The more time you spend in your grow room looking @ your plants & seeing what's going on in your grow room on a daily basis the better cannabis farmer you'll b.

Thanks! Feeling a lot better about this first one now. Everything is proceeding as it should be so far. Nice looking grow you've got going on there, am I right that you cut a hole into your wall to vent? That's dedication right there.

Thanx & yes I have a LUNG room in which I bring in fresh air VIA Hurricane435 CFM intake fan with a Mushroom air filter on to filter out any unwanted shit in the air.

Hey Cali. I am running House and Garden nutes mainly with a few Advanced products (Bud Candy, Nirvanna and Big Bud) sprinkled in there. During Flower I also use Bloombastic by Atami.

I don't swap my res out during veg, I just top off. Julius I cut a hole in my ceiling to vent. 1000w HPS puts out a lot of heat....best to push it out the room completely.

Roots in the water 1.5 days from seed? How big is your netpot?

I wouldn't say thats normal. Thats really good progress.

I never go directly to netpots though...so maybe I wouldn't be the best commenter.

Great white is expensive. I like hydroguard better.

3.5" Netpots.

And it wasn't true root growth. It was just the taproot. I guess it went down and just sort of kept going. That was 3 days ago and it's just today that the one long smooth taproot is beginning to grow real roots off of itself.
