is this nessesary?

A meter will save your grow.

I'm going to disagree and say it is not necessary. You can choose to monitor a grw in a way that it "is" necessary. Or not. I have one and I follow the nute manufacturer's feeding schedule and change the res every week. I have a meter and can check ppms mid week, but I don't add more till change time so I seldom bother. I really don't need mine at all.

and maybe you don't like to wear them
but they can save your ass.

I don't see a scenario where a tds meter would save my grow the way I do it. But like I said, if you set up your process to depend on a meter, then you have to depend on it.

If you consistantly use the same nutrients and your water is pretty consistant, you really don't need one. It's good to have one around though.

If you want to keep your wife from getting fat its a good idea to keep one around. I thought this was a weed forum?

You don't need one after you have used one to learn how to grow.

But then if you change nutes
or strains
you may have better result by using a meter,
even if you are experienced.

Following a nute calculator
and not being sure if you made all the correct measurements
can be fatal.

If you have a meter
you can see if you measured correctly
and you can see of the plant is eating
when the tds falls.

You will learn more about your plants
if you learn to grow with a meter.

All the nute calculators are very general guidelines
and not specific to weed, or lettuce, or tomatoes
and you will do better if you learn to use a meter
to feed your plants the lowest tds possible.

Remember that roots uptake water and nutes by osmosis,
and if your nutes are very salty, high tds,
then osmosis is harder to achieve.

Your plants are happiest
and your buds will be stickier
on a lean diet.

Using a TDS meter pays off even quicker than using a pH meter. I really don't recommend buying cheap meters if you v can buy a good one, but you can buying a TDS meter for $30. You can easily save that amount in nutrients with one grow by using it. A TDS and a pH meter is often what determines whether a newbie has a sucessful grow or just wastes their time and money. Money spent on a TDS meter and a pH meter is definitely a better investment that the best AN nutrients or the best hybrid seeds.
