Tenant Insurance

It's time to renew our renters insurance, and the insurance company (CAA) wants a letter from my doctor explaining why I am growing my own pot. Apparently,, they approve coverage based on individual cases...

I say bullshit, all they need is proof that I am allowed to grow X # of plants... how would my illness affect their risk assessment? I could understand sending out an inspector (not that I'd be happy with that either) or looking at some factor that is about risk, not just being nosey..

What experiences have others had?

Did it affect your rate much?

Did you need a note from your doctor? (sounds so childish)

Wow, what a paranoid bunch over a few plants.... got this from my broker:

So I have inquired about this and it has been advised that legally you can only have 4 plants grown in the dwelling.
Having 20 plants will void any insurance you have and I will legally have to inform the insurance company since it has been noted.
In order to keep insurance I will need confirmation that there are only 4 plants in the residence.
If you have received legally permission to grow more than that amount allowed than please forward that to me.
Please advise me as I am now legally obligated to inform your current provider. CAA will not take the risk with 20 plants.

I had already told her I could send my Health Canada registrations, and that we ARE legal, but CYA is top priority apparently... Shoot first, ask questions later...

Well that's good to know that at least they are respecting the 4 plant thing wasn't sure if insurance companies would cover it at all.

Ah, but at what cost?
That depends I guess but if you're insurance company is open to weed that is a step in the right direction as any company that would insure before legalization was $1000's .We can't always have it the way we ant it but have to start somewhere and it's better then them saying they'll void you.

I went a step further and moved all my flowering stuff into this shipping container. I'll keep the four mothers I don't have to tell them about inside the house.
As an aside the guy at the grow store told me his house burned down cause his kid was cooking. He had 400 medical plants he never told his insurance (co-operators) about, but they still covered his claim.

I wouldn't think I will be denied insurance over this, especially with proof it is medical, and therefore legal.

What worries me now is if they say ok, how will it affect my premiums?

We've been with Economical for many years and finally got good auto rates, then they raised them this year claiming something about bad drivers in the area or some risk assessment... Anyhow, that's what prompted us to check around, and my broker found CAA to be about the same as we had been paying, so we decided to switch. That's when this started...

It turns out that CAA will not take on the policy because of the LEGAL GROW... So my broker checked with Economical, and they made a note of it, and that's it, end of story, not even a premium increase! So we are leaving our coverage with Economical, and will pay the small increase in our auto premiums (about $15 per month) knowing that our insurance is valid, and everything is on the up and up...

It is none of an insurance companies business if you are growing plants or not. Just the same as you do not need to inform them if you brew booze. It is legal and not a loophole for not covering you. I don't give a fuck what they try to say, it is not a legal reason to deny coverage. So as long as you stick to growing what you are legally allowed to they cannot legally deny coverage.

Cheers :)

He’s very lucky, because if the insurance company found out about the 400 plants.....the policy would have been cancelled, and not covered at all.

Seems mums the word is still the best policy unless you want to pay extortion prices or have your policy cancelled...

With regards to my container, I only told insurance about the plug I had a licensed electrician install on the exterior of an out building. Container is fireproof and not attached to the house so no reason to tell them.
