i would get a 3x3 thts there footprint pretty much..a 4x4 is like the maxxx for a 400w..
i ran a 400w a few grows ago in a 3x3 by 7ft tall tent with only a duct booster fan ($25 on amazon) venting from the top and bottom vents open always, and a fan inside mixing it up..temps never got over 85F and this was summer time..room wasnt a/c but the hallway was soo good luck man

4x4 is good, yes the foot print is 3x3 or what ever, but its always nice to have a little room to work with, so unless your really on a tight budget I would go for the 4x4
about ventilation, 440 cfm might be right (have`t done the mat) but it also depends, on your temperatures and if your run a cool tube (I would strongly advice you to get one, the grow will be much more easy and result will be better as your able to keep the light close, so top buds get even more light and bottom buds actually can grow in to nice smokeable buds)
I reccon a nice good quality 4" could work with a cool tube and a 400W, tho agin, budget, if you can spare the extra 40$ go for a 5" with speed control

thats what ill do thanks ill be ordering sometime next month was planning on a cool tube ill also look into the 5" budget will be just about unlimited want to get the most i can out of a 400 watt wish i could go bigger but i cant where i live people come in and inspect twice a year so i gotta keep it kinda small and as smell free as possible it will be going deep in a closet

I agree with the 4x4 and if ever down the road you wanted to upgrade there is room for it..

ok if you want to get the most out of it, go for a light that can run both MH and HPS and use MH in Veg and HPS in flowering,
a 400W is able to grow some nice buds, but a cool tube will make a hugh different on the lower buds as your able to keep the light much closer,

if your able to use a little extra here, go for a cool hood instead, will spread the light and reflect it much better,
sumthing like this:
grow 4 nice plants with a veg time on 5 weeks or so, or some kind of scorg/SoG and grow 9 small plants (maybe auto`s ?) and flower early ..

I've been looking into tents now too, the closet I'm using just isn't working out. I also have a 400W hid, and these are the two tents I've been looking at.

If your going to use a cool tube then consider using a 6" fan. Since 6" is one of standard sizes for cool tubes, CFs and ducting. You'll have a lot more choice of like size products over a 5".

Well the cubic feet of a tent that is 4'x4'x6'8" is like 109 cubic feet i believe.. So a 400+ cfm fan is going to change ALL the air in your tent every 15 seconds..
I was thinking somewhere along the lines of DIY (mostly ducting parts) carbon scrubber into a 6" inline fan pulling 160cfm through a cool hood ducted to another 6" inline fan going out of the tent. The two fans isolated in the same system will provide if my "smart" friend is correct right around 220 actual cfm, so my tents air will be completely swapped out 2 times a minute.
