Well I would say if you want to use your 400watter in such a SMALL area, you are going to have to keep the AC duct running. I just dont see how you could keep an area thats 3' x 1.5' cool with a 400w HPS. For such a small space I could be wrong but I think you'd have been better off with a 250 or even 150.

Make sure you are bringing the cold air in the bottom of one side and out the top of the other side. That way the cold air makes it all the way through your tent from side to side and bottom to top as it flows through.

Another suggestion I would make is turn the thermostat on your AC unit all the way up so that it always runs, but also turn up the temperature of the AC. This way you are getting a constant flow of less cold air and it will maintain a constant temp. It will take some experimenting to find the right temp to regulate your tent but you will find it.

Cooltube or CFL's are both definitely options for you! But is there any reason you can't run the AC on low for the whole time? Also, Smoke alot makes a great point that you should make sure the air gets to travel through the whole grow room instead of taking the fastest route to the exit duct. Good luck!

Oooh what was i thinking, of course you can't keep the AC on all the time, it's january >.<. Ah shit man, well good luck to you. Maybe get some CFLs to get going for now until you can get a cooltube?

I know this is extreme, but maybe if your grow doesn't have to be to stealthy you'd have somewhere else to very temporarily hang your lights and put your plants until you sort it out? I know if it is an open area it won't be nearly as efficient light wise, but your plants could die under 100oF :-\

Yeah, or at least open up your cabinet and and hang a blanket or something to stop light but then it would make more area for heat to escape underneath the blanket. That's all I can really think of without actually seeing the cab! But like I said before. Turn your AC temp down and make it run full time. You'll find an equilibrium where the temp will eventually stay right where it needs to be. Also make sure it's on a timer so it doesn't freeze your babies when the light goes out.

You can also put in a cool-mist humidifier in there as well...will keep humidity up for seedlings/veg stage and also keep it cooler.

make sure its not pumped strait from the ac to the bottom were the plants are, cold will shock them. unless its not ice cold. 65 70 degrees is ok, colder than that and i wouldnt. i have a 400w mh/hps in my closet, its a 2 foot deep 3 foot wide 5 foot tall area, i only use heavy 4mm plastic sheats, black and clear, if you could get black and white its better. my i have no ventelation going into or out of my room besides a fan by the door and a fan blowing on my light, i try to keep the door open as much as possable but its right by my bed so its a no go at night. when its closed and the fans are on it gets up to 90 but with it open and fans going its about 80 to 85. i jumped the gun too and got the 400w system, but thats because i am going to be getting a new house and will have more space. a 150 or maybe even a 250w would have been great for this area... and would have saved me money... but ill just have to make due and rig up a screan hanging under my light for shade while the plants are young.

id say if its ok with the ac on in it then keep the ac on except durring the night cycle.
