Ace of spades #1 and #2 both turned out to be males. #1 is much larger and a faster grower than #2. But #2 has a stalker structure and slightly tighter nodes. I'd really like to get a black cherry soda pheno since i already have jtr. So assuming bcs is more indica dominant than jtr, i think my aos#2 resembles traits of the bcs. So aos#2 will probably be the one i collect the pollen from.

The Agent orange male i have is a solid plant too. It has strong branches, quick growth (first plant of any to show sex) and the node spacing is acceptable. This plant will be used to cross a few steains as well.


One question i have though is, if i cross Aos #2 with Aos#3, will this create seeds that are prone to hermie? I tried to read about this but it was confusing. To me it seems it would either make a more stable strain, or make it extremely prone to hermie

It should not be any more prone to hermie than either plant already was. AOS is an F1 cross of JTR and BCS which will result in relatively uniform offspring (AOS). What happens when you cross AOS to AOS is you are going to get a much more random and varied expression of the genes. For example let say AOS F1 has 4 phenos when you cross it again to make F2 seeds you might have 12+ phenos. Some will be much more like JTR, some like BCS, and a highly variable mix of the two. This means some will be duds but not many, and some will be very special plants with the best of both, also not many. Most of them will still be very solid plants with no more chance of herming than the AOS parents.

Hey ricky, just read through your journal, and I'm really impressed with your first hempy run, everything look great. One comment I have for your next run is to paint your buckets black, you'll notice when you break these buckets down that there will be some algae along the bucket walls, I don't know if it really harms anything, just something I've noticed over the yrs I've run hempy's.

As far as chucking pollen, with the AO I'd hit an arm of each of the girls. As far as chasing down a specific pheno of a strain, I wouldn't worry about it. To do this right you'd have to pop a bunch of seeds take clones of all and make several runs to narrow it down. It could take yrs. If you find the pheno you really like then you can take a few clones of it and force one to change sides and go male, then you'll get femed seeds with the highest likelihood of producing the same pheno again. I did this with a Bay 11.

Keep up the good work and I'll be lurking. Always interested in hempy grows.

Thanks wattsaver. I've been enjoying watching them grow. I was worried when they were young, but once they developed a nice root system they took off.
As far as the bucket color goes, i was told that it might cause issues, but i just never did it. I suppose i still could paint them or at least wrap them in something.

I agree with you on the pollen chucking. Im not really trying to create a perfect strain. Although it would be cool, like you said it would take multiple runs to narrow down genes/phenos. I simply want seeds because this might be the last grow for a little while, and i dont want to lose these strains.
I am hoping that with the AO x JTR seeds i find a keeper. Oranges and lemons, yes please.

Excited to see how your seeds come out just as much as the buds lol. I'd like to grab two of my favorite strains and throw them in a pollen room to load up on like 500 beans! Think of the savings! So how do you know when the seeds are done anyhow? Just take a look and if they have that nice brown shade with the black dots/stripes they're good?

Exactly. I mean if you love a strain but want to venture out and try something new, youll have a stash you can come back to.

As far as ripe seeds go I'm not 100% sure. From what I've read it seems that it takes roughly 4 to 6 weeks after pollination to develope healthy seeds.

From my experience it takes a min of 4wks on the stock to get viable seeds. I've also found that the longer you cure the seed bud the bigger and darker the seeds get.

From my experience it takes a min of 4wks on the stock to get viable seeds. I've also found that the longer you cure the seed bud the bigger and darker the seeds get.

So it'd probably be best to pollinate around week 2 of 12/12 or as early as possible? You're saying it's best to chop and trim like normal then pic the seeds out after a long cure?

Im not sure why but i cant see those pictures for some reason.
But still some helpful info. Im hoping the males i have develope viable pollen by the end of the week. The plants have been under 12/12 for roughly 10 days. So they need to be pollinated soon id imagine

I have gotten viable seeds in 3-4 weeks. I think it is somewhat strain dependent. I believe sativas will take longer and indicas quicker generally. Sometimes a strain will tend not to have the calyxes pop open so you can see the seeds. JillyBean was this way for me, I thought that I wouldn't get viable seeds but ended up with about a hundred off that plant once I opened up the calyxes and picked the seeds out. I did not cure the buds with the seeds in them. Pollination was still happening at week 5 and all seeds I found looked very healthy when I harvested. I only popped 6 but have gotten 100% germination. My opinion is don't over think it, if you pollinate at week 3-4 and let the plant go to week 8-9 you will have healthy seeds. Keep the nitrogen and potassium levels a bit higher as well if you want to give the seeds the best growth/health.

Im excited to see how these strains turn out, and see if i cant get a few nice hybrids from this pollen chuck.

Touche, great simple info Cascadian. Definitely better to pick seeds pre-cure that way you'll beat up the remaining nugs less!

Girls looking real randy ricky. Very nice.
