Read garden knowms thread on cfl proximity to foilage.. I put my lights all one inch away from my plant, woke up this morning, 5 burnt leaves.. Thanks fOr the shit advice..
Yes the lumens drop the farther away your lights get but at 3 inches its only a drop of like 40-60 lumens per bulb also the distance means not raiseing every day. Also being within an inch of the plant and haveing a fan blowing on it to try and cool it down could bend your plants (depending on how strong/big your plants are) But I do agree on the hand methond of putting your hand in between the plant and the light to make sure its not to hot (good call)Another thing is, with cfls, once you get more than 3 inches away the lumens really drop.
Good rule of thumb(or hand) is the hand test. Put your hand between the light and the plant and if you feel a lot of heat, move it back. Also, if you are going to keep your lights an inch away (like i do) its good to have a fan blowing directly at the lights and plant, helps keep the heat away from the plant.
Hope your plants rejuve. Id get rid of the leaves that are burnt, cuz your plant is only going to waste energy trying to repair it.

Yes Yes Yes! Thats the ticket. That is deff. the best. Take all the info you can but when it comes down to it do what you feel is best and just use your head. For that statment alone +rep (if i can learn how to give it to you... lol)you should def change ur rule of thumb by how often you check/raise the plants to suite ur needs best.
