1 inch = bad 3-4 inch = good There may not be alot of heat from the lights but it will still burn them if too close. A good rule of thumb is 3-4 inches mabye 2 but still best at 3-4. I keep mine at 3 1/2 and raise them every other day by one chain link.
Hope you have better luck with this.

What's up dw, yea I felt one inch was crazy, but it was a thread starter n had like 5 stars.. Wtf.. Any advice I got from here with my almost 150 posts, all lead to great advice. This one was a heavily used thread, sooo I figured maybe this gy knows something. But yea since this morning I lifted my lights, they are all about 3 inches away now.. I have pics but I'm on my phone n I can't upload them right now. I ur still checkin the post I'll have pics up in a couple hours, by tonight, not that bad, just the tips of a couple fan leafs, largest burn is about half inch wide by an inch long..

Good rule of thumb(or hand) is the hand test. Put your hand between the light and the plant and if you feel a lot of heat, move it back. Also, if you are going to keep your lights an inch away (like i do) its good to have a fan blowing directly at the lights and plant, helps keep the heat away from the plant.
Hope your plants rejuve. Id get rid of the leaves that are burnt, cuz your plant is only going to waste energy trying to repair it.
Another thing is, with cfls, once you get more than 3 inches away the lumens really drop.

Yes the lumens drop the farther away your lights get but at 3 inches its only a drop of like 40-60 lumens per bulb also the distance means not raiseing every day. Also being within an inch of the plant and haveing a fan blowing on it to try and cool it down could bend your plants (depending on how strong/big your plants are) But I do agree on the hand methond of putting your hand in between the plant and the light to make sure its not to hot (good call)

With that said how are your plants looking now with 3 inches of room?

I know what your saying about the phone. I dont have a camera and all my pics are on my phone to. For me its to much of a hassel to get them on the computer. But keep in touch hayzeheven and let me know what other problems you have I will help the best I can. bongsmilie

hand rule yes!

if you pay attention to the height and can move the lights constantly, 1 inch is not bad for low wat CFLs

Yeah dude wooly's rule of thumb is really good, plus I read that in a lot of advanced growing books. Til you learn the heat thing tho, I really like lights 2-3 inches from plants. you should def change ur rule of thumb by how often you check/raise the plants to suite ur needs best.

Yes Yes Yes! Thats the ticket. That is deff. the best. Take all the info you can but when it comes down to it do what you feel is best and just use your head. For that statment alone +rep (if i can learn how to give it to you... lol)
