I have a 17" wide x 10" Deep x 55" high cab. Going to have 3-6 cfls and 2-4 plants Would 2 of these on a 100cfm pc fan work? Thanks

Just want to say thanks to the OP. It also works on a 4'' HTG inline fan that I used. Very easy to do. Only thing I would change is the way you fill the cup with carbon around the little cup by putting it in the sock and pulling it out. I just held the small cup down and slowly turned it around filling it with carbon.

I also put in some zeolite crystals with the carbon as I've hear that works great too.

Now I have to deal with the A/C vent in the room that the closet grow is in. I can patch it but I'd rather not. Seems like I have to make a 6'' x 7'' carbon/zeolite crystal pad and put that behind the A/C vent grill.

Yo i got a question, sorry if its already been asked but does this have to be with an extractor fan?. Can it be with a regular fan?.

anybody else have the problem with the inside smaller cup popping out? As soon as I pulled the panty hose back over the large cup the small one popped right out, like I was afraid it would do. Is it OK if the small cup pops all the way out? I wouldn't think so.

After thinking about it for about 17 seconds I figured I could just get something to harness the small cup to the large cup like a zip tie or something, I'm sure that will stop it from slipping out. Thanks for the write up!

Haha well I went to walmart today to build my filter for my new fan... My mind came up with terry cloths and this plastic plumbing filter thing (looks like a cone car airfilter). Used the same charcoal in the pic. Restricted airflow waaaay too much so I came on here and BOOM, perfect solution. Glad this was posted.

I can say that the smell has been cut down my at least 95% with the filters installed. The number may be higher if my box was sealed around the edges a little better.

Pics as promised.
r6ironman...I have a tent that's pretty much the same dimensions as your cab....Does your cool spinoff of the filter attach to the top of your tent...what kind of fan are you pushing through them?...light?...I've got a 400w hps that I need to cool in addition to eliminating as much smell as possible...and I was thinking I could pick up a 435 cfm fan to sit on top of my tent that will suck through oh 2-3 ft of ducting connected to the 400w hps cool tube...and then through the tri-filter on top..??

Think this could work???

Have people had luck mounting this thing horizontally? The carbon keeps settling more to one side because of gravity, leaving areas of very low carbon coverage.

I'm probably going to build about 3 of these tomorrow, I just have a question

My fans are 120mm 60~80 CFM. So, they're a bit larger than the large pencil cup. I was just going to cut a hole the size of the big cup, put the fan on the outside pulling air through, and the filter on the inside.

Should my hole be the size of the small cup or of the big cup?
I figure if I make it the size of the small cup, it will make sure all of the air that gets pulled through goes through the carbon completely, but it will reduce air flow a lot
But if I use the big cup sized hole, then will the air be pulled completely through the carbon still?
Obviously the bigger hole seems to be fine, I just want to be sure before I go and put giant holes in my cab haha

Also, a more involved question that doesn't necessarily need to be answered, but if someone knowledgeable reads this, maybe they can answer this too.
I have a fairly small sized cab, 42"x35.5"x15". But I plan on using 3 60~80 CFM (on the box it says 60~80, that's what I get for buying cheap fans lol) for exhaust up top, and two 31.5 CFM fans at the bottom for intake. I figured the exhaust fans will lose power because of the filter. So here's the actual question:
Are all of these fans necessary? Haha.
Considering the fact that my cab is not so big. I just want to make sure..
And I'm only going to be using CFLs. I haven't put together the fixture yet so it's hard to say how many.. But either way there shouldn't be too much heat coming off them

Is there such a thing as overkill with the air movement?

Thank you for responses to either questions, or tips. Or comments. Anything really. I'm just excited to get this started haha

try assembling the whole thing and running the fans and lights to see how warm it gets in there.
Thats how I found out my original fan setup sucked.
I fixed the nursery before bring any babies in.
Glad I did or Judy would be dead now.
Good luck with your grow and may all your buds be tight.

I have drove to walmart / office depot / meijer / sears / kmart and none of these have the right size cups to do this. The design seems to have changed and now has a lip around the top for the cups that they do carry in 2 diff sizes. Otherwise everyone is selling the 4 3/8 X 5 xxx cups.

Great DIY tho, just need to find the darn cups
