i have a aquarium heater and its being set at 75 and i didnt have a bubbler so you r right prolly not enough oxygenThe only thing i can think of is lack of oxygen or possibly getting to hot in the res. I made a 5gal DWC and had some heat problems wiyh my res and had to switch to soil. It was a almost a fully mature plant but it was going pretty good wether or not it was filled completely or 5-6 inches from the top. As long as the bubbles are bubbling on it it should be fine, even if you have it full as long as there are enough air bubbles and the temp is under 75 you shouldnt have any problems. I know in mine i added h202 (hydrogen pyroxide) and it seemed to help on the brown soft roots but i dont know how it would do adding it to a cloner.
Well io hope this helps a little.

Don't chop the stem up, just do so some shaving so that the clone will think that the bottom of the stem was already roots and produce roots from the shaved spot.I am using one of these that I built. I did have a question though, what is the purpose to cutting the stem. I did not do that to my plants and I have not seen any roots yet. I have 8 plants in there over a week and have seen no roots yet. Temp is 75 and humidity is 80%.
if that is the case couldnt you just put the plants in foam and put them in a fish tank and let them bob around till roots start?i use 24 hr with a fish tank light and use normal water for foliar feeding inside the dome
