I could't find Pro-mix HP in my area but Walmart sells basic Pro-mix in the red bales for 13$. I tried to compare the two and it appeared the HP has more perlite for better drainage. I sent Pro-mix an email asking about it and this was their reply:

Case# 00174258 - What is the difference between promix hp and promix in the red bales? Can I add some extra perlite and gypsum and be about the same? Pro-mix hp is just not available in our area.

Hi Laddyd,
Between the promix hp and red bales the difference is the drainage, as a high porosity mix the hp will have better drainage than the red bale but the nutrient components are roughly the same. Yes addditionnal perlite and gypsum can be added without any issues.

The first year I decided to grow in containers the bales of Promix were up at around $60 in my area so doing a dozen 30-gallon/115-liter containers would have been pricey using Promix. After a little research at the UC Berkeley School of agriculture I found they recommended a 5% use of pulverized dolamite by weight to buffer peat moss for agricultural use.

I did the math to get the 1300 liters of mix. Peat bails where about 32kg.

5-100 liter compressed bales of peat @$13 each
3-100 liter bags perlite @$18 each
1-100 liter bag vermiculite @$25 each
8kg dolamite - $4

I can't say it was fun mixing all that shit up on a large tarp, but it was somewhat rewarding knowing the price point I was hitting for this mix.
The mix performed fine using Jack's that year.

Now that I found an agricultural distributer, that sells Berger BM6 for $23 a bale I'm never breaking my back again to save a few bucks.

That's really smart. We can't get promix here easily either. I'm in south Thailand I checked the local version of ebay and they don't have any promix.
I am going to add perlite to a version of this mix see what the ph and ec do.
Thanks for the tip man your the second person to say perlite to me today. I think I should start listening haha.

Everything grows better with perlite! That's one of the reasons to love ProMix HP. HP stands for High Porosity and pot loves that. So much perlite in HP that it's almost too much but you can grow in 100% perlite if you want. I may try that against one with straight HP and one with coco that I will add 30% perlite to as it doesn't have any. 3 identical clones from the same mother to keep things as equal as possible. Feed them all 3-part nutes at the same dose and see what happens. I bought a big bag of Canna coco last year for an experiment like this. Costs more than twice as much as HP and the store to get it is 2 hours away. Shipping is expensive to northern Alberta.

With alot of perlite you need to water slowly so it doesn't float up to the top. Once rooted thoroughly you don't need to worry so much.

I like the dramm brand watering can with the long rose head I think it's 3 liters or so

I've looked at this "method" but fail to see what's so special about it. There are other methods of growing as good or better. Bugbee is a very smart man but there is nothing magical about his growing method.

Yes, I am aware. Many people have had success growing in other different styles and different medias. I still consider myself a new grower since I have only been growing for 3 years now. This is the only method I have tried and it works for me and its nice to connect with others that grow the same way and share ideas and tips. I am sure Coco-Coir growers do the same thing, there are even websites dedicated to growing in coco specifically. All I am trying to do is connect with others who grow using this method.
