Yea mine is a 3.2L displacement. There are 2.8L ones though.

My friend used to have a Golf that we swapped in a VR6 and build a home made turbo system using a straight 60 trim T4 with a divided (twin scroll) turbine. 100% stock long block, 18 psi on C16 and this car was fucking ruthless! Front strut towers ended up breaking away from the firewall and rest of the chassis from a combo of rust and insane torque so the car was parted out and scrapped...

It was a rust pile from the start, $900 car. The plan was eventually to stitch weld the entire car but it fell apart first...

my guess too.... and dro.. 1.8t engines are not cheap at all, if i was gonna drop something in it itd be a vr6
ya but if you wanted a boosted car it would be better to get a 1.8t then to put a ebay turbo kit on it. vr6 DOES sound better though

those vr6's sound so nice and throaty with a nice say neuspeed exhaust on them...
a few years ago my nephew who was probably like 8 or so at the time, were at the waterfest vw show, standing next to this twin turbo'ed vr6 r32, and dude started it up and got it to the limiter.. i think my nephew poo'ed his pants at it, lol...
thing sounded oh so mean though..

the vr6 is just as fast as the 1.8t... then if you boost it, that 1.8t doesnt have a chance. i do like the 1.8t mk4 gli's though, they got a lip on the front of em that the vr6's dont have. looks pretty sick

ya for sure but you said the 1.8t is too expensive. boosted vr6 will cost a good amount more. probably twice as much by the end of it.
