As being part of the "young" generation I can say the psychedelic use has all but evaporated in the US of A (at least along the east coast). As far as drug use goes it is all about pharmaceuticals now a days. I couldn't even begin to count the amount of kids I've met who have used/currently use pharmaceutical benzodiazepines, opiates, amphetamines, ect. recreational wise. How I see it is that drug use for the majority of teenagers is based on the drugs most popular in the mass media due to the strong desire teenagers have to be accepted by others and in turn conform to the most popular ideas. For example the popular genre of music to listen to in the UK currently is dubstep which is a sub-genre(?) of techno. Techno is most associated with raves (long lasting dance parties usually consisting of a "psychedelia" theme). Due to music genre and physical environment of most raves the promotion of empathetic, psychedelic, and euphoric drugs are widely seen. While in America the popular genre is what this generation defines as "rap" such as Lil'Wayne, Drake, Yo Gotti, ect. who constantly promote their own Hollywood painted fame and power along with the use of pharmaceutical drugs (Pill Poppin' Animal, Oxycotton, My Mom, ect. )in their music. Teenagers being the egocentric pricks they are become lured in by the flashy objects of monetary value sung by the "rappers" and shown in their "music" videos. That then leads them to want to imitate the actions these "rappers" sing about in a futile attempt to gain envy, interest, and idolization from peers and others. For the kids who are worried of the more serious legal complications associated with the physical actions these "gangsters" take to acquire their falsified status of power they turn to selling and using known high risk physically and mentally addictive drugs. The most easiest of which to procure are from big pharma. Of course there are other variables to a person's drug of choice such as availability, recreational desired effects, ect.
