Is there a summary of everything learned from this thread? I'm trying this right now and it would be great to have a compiled a simple reference.

thanks

Great thread and great concept, Azgrow! I'm going to spend the next few hours zipping through the pages...but...yes...a very simple and workable concept, methinks.

Well here's a couple of things I thought were important besides the actual method described on the first like 3 pages.

6-6.5 ph water
3 gallon buckets
.5"-1" hole (depending on size of medium) 2" from bottom of bucket
100% perlite, 50/50 perlite and verm, or 3.5 to 1 perlite verm (Hempy's mix)

water daily till tap root hits resevoir (10-14 days)
Wait about 2-3 weeks before using nutes (basically after tap root sets in)

feeding schedule (each step is about 2 days apart; increase nute level until recommended/appropriate level):
water water light feed water water increased feed ~~~~~water water regular feed etc

molasses can be used through whole cycle:
veg - 1 tbl per gal a day or two before feeding every other feeding/week
flower - same but with 2 tbl
flush - use for 1 week then pure h20 for last couple days

That should be enough to get started.I'll skim the thread again when I have time to see if I can find anything else since I wrote these notes a while back.

Glad to see someone else is using the hempy bucket method. I'm currently on my 3rd grow using this method. My "buckets" are old plastic 1 gallon coffee containers. I've posted a couple pics of the girl I have going right now. She's almost ready - trichs are 30% amber 60% cloudy and 10% clear. Hopefully by this weekend.
Them pics are awesome what strain is it ? :blsmoke:

Well after reading the first ten pages of this thread i"m going out to buy me some perlite and lots of small plastic cups :blsmoke:

Cheers azgrow

By the way i"m from UK can anyone advise me on what nutes i will need for this sort of grow ? Cheers :peace:

So I have a rather odd question. The short end of it is, for those of you who have used hempy buckets in detail, how often do you water?

The longer story is as follows. I don't have much experience with this type of system, but I have grown a few plants in small cups hempy style, to see if I liked it, and so far I have. So I started a few seedlings in about six 44oz styrophome cups, filled with hydrotron pellets (I know these arn't the favorite medium, but I like them). The cups are about 8.5 inches tall, and I have the whole about 2.25 inches up from the bottom of the cup. My plan was to veg in these cups, then cut out the bottoms and transplant four of them into five gallon buckets, filled with hydrotron pellets in a hempy bucket style. I was watering every two days or so, then trying to space them out, to see how long I could go between waterings, letting the plants tell me when they need water. To date the seedlings are about three weeks old, and it has been a week since I last watered them and they seem rather healthy, is this normal? I remembered reading that they need to be watered about every 2-3 days.

I know alot of factors are involved, such as temp (mine is around 80-82, depending on ambient temps), distance from the light and source (about 20 inches away from a 400w HPS) along with the strain (Nirvana's Blue Mystic) and the plant's size and age. I'm sure there are several other factors involved.

My main goal is to figure out how often everyone is watering, and if going a week without watering is normal, because I don't think it is. I'm not too worried about it, they seem healthy, just getting a pulse as to where I am at in comparison to everyone else. Also, should I expect to maintain this feeding cycle, or should I expect for it to be considerably reduced further on, when the plant gets bigger and begins to flower? I know flowering plants use alot more water, but just trying to get a grip on what's going to happen. Thanks to all who can help.

IMHO if all you are using in hydrotron then you dont have anything in the pot tha will absorb or wick the moisture from the bottom of the bucket... also the 44 0z cups are a bit large for seedlings it may take a while for the roots to hit the bottom

That's what I was expecting. I was expecting to have to water every day or every other day till the roots made it to the bottom, like 3 or 4 weeks. But it doesn't seem to be the case.

Not that I'm complaining about watering once a week. It's very low stress, but I just thought it was odd.

I have a question about water that i dont think anyones brought up yet... instead of measuring ph exactly and all that stuff, would it be ok to just use water filtered from a brita or something like that? the ph would be neutral enough from that right, anyone?

its fine to use a brita filter as long as its not a water softner as this removes certain minerals from the water...peace az

Can I bottom water?
What I plan/want to do/try is put the buckets in a tray with a float valve to maintain the water level?

Currently using 1:1 perlite vermiculite (think there is too much verm)

I recommend making free organic tea, and using that. That way you know what's in it, and don't have to worry about buying cat pee for 12 dollars a bottle.

You don't want to maintain that water level. You'll end up getting root rot. It's important for the plants to drink up the water that they have in that resevoir at the bottom of the bucket before you add new water. If you always keep that water there in the bottom those roots won't be able to get enough air to live, and wamo, root rot.

I don't see the problem with bottom feeding per say, assuming that the medium you use has enough of a wick type action. It's important for all of the roots to get some water, and not just the ones on the bottom. That being said I don't really see the advantage of bottom feeding to top feeding.

If you were planning on using your home automation style float valve on hempy buckets, I think you would be better off just doing it the way you have it right now. Top feeding with drippers twice a week. I think that if you switched your set up from where the resevior was on the float valve, to where all of the buckets were on the float valve you'll end up over watering, getting diseases, stressing the plant, and inviting root rot.

I hope this helps, but I would like to hear what Az has to say on the topic, as he certainly is more of the authority on the matter than I.
