I went out and bought 4 buckets.. and made the exact same thing you did... i used mesh string to cover the hole and im going to use a mix of hydrotons and perlite. Ill take pictures and do a journal of it :) see what the difference really is.

Thanks for all the info, I'm really excited to try this next grow ... (I harvest around 4/20 YAY)

Azgrow, can you explain to me what you mean by this in your first post?
"personally ima sog grower so i grow plants in 32 oz cups then bog those on top of 1 gal water jugs all 100%perlite..."

What do you mean by you bog your cups on top of 1 gal jugs?

Honestly, once you have the HB method down, it's really a simple process. I don't pay any more noticeable attention to my HB clones, than the moms. Pretty stress free to me. BTW, have 2 HB clones that I just stuck in my buckets yesterday and gave them their first light nutes (1/4 recommeded strength). I have 4 clones going and 2 water clones I'm still waiting to root.

i cut the bottems of the cups off an burry half the cup at the top of a 1gal water jug....so i veg in the cups then when to flower i put them ontop of a 1gal for root room...peace az

Considering how many people's grows are above floor level, has anyone considered gluing some flexible tubing to the hole and running that to a catch basin for the excess water? It would make it very easy to leave your plants where they are.

But with the tube, you could have the overflow container under your cab or something and save space, as well as make it easy to dump out. You also remove the possibility of the sitting water creating a moist environment for mold. It also means you would have to move your plants every time you water them.

Poke, this is a good suggestion for commercial growers who have dozens or hundreds of plants. For me, a personal grower, I prefer to take my plants out of their grow-cab occasionally to "air out", while I water them. It's no big deal to move 5 or 6 plants. Just my opinion.

I might have missed it but when you feed, how much water do you let spill out. I would think it's good to flush the old water sitting in the 1" or 2" res. Can anyone elaborate on this one part for me please does it change when the roots reach compared to when they don't reach the res?

you dont need to overflow...that would be more of a prefrence thing....but everyonce inawhile you should leach all mediums of built up nute salts....peace az

don't you love missing a thread then 10 pages later...

az turned me on to the hempy method... i had been running organic soil before this...
i'll take a video later today of me taking a clone from my bubble cloner and making/transplanting into a 32 oz. styrofoam cup 100% perlite hempy style... so you have a step by step process on how to start your own.

very simple, and your containers can usually be recycled objects meaning you save $$$

all of this is hempy style

what is the purpose of the styrofoam cup filled with perlite mix inside the milk jug filled with the mix as well

so you veg in the cup, then when you flower instead of creating transplant shock, you just put it on top of the gallon jug, right?
