No, the school system teaches children that some people can use force to make others pay for things they don't want and don't use.

How is that good? It isn't.

The best system can never be one where some people make others pay them under duress....that's a form of enslavement.

In the absence of a ransom based public indoctrination system (the present system) do you really think people would not create a more just and accomplished way of achieving their goals? The best thing to do with the present system is to let it compete with others. How long do you think it would last then, IF people had a real choice rather than being forced to fund a "welfare for teachers" program?

Also, using your argument of "times are different" why pay millions for brick and mortar schools now when the internet exists ?

The ONLY reason public schools exist is the teachers and administration have a stranglehold and use "the children" as a human shield.

So, if we offer the parents of poor children attending failing schools a choice about where to educate their kids Chicago will become Mogadishu? The Chicago teacher's union has the first mortgage on every child, and the real racists want to keep it that way.

“whiter, more religious, more married, better educated, and wealthier than national averages.”
so basically, if you are homeschooled, chances are you are better educated because you are white, believe in god, have money and your parents are married.
