from what i remember it's always been like that lol. skate parks were never really fun where i lived because they were so scarce (not that any of them were that great anyway), and even if you could find someone to take the 45 minute drive to get to the big indoor park it would end up packed within the hour of opening so we wouldn't bother.
taking the bus all the way to downtown cleveland and skating the city was where it was at. so many spots, good places to eat, good people. nobody bothered us too much about it either. busy suits heading to work really don't have time to start shit lol.
When you and your nephew get a little practice in you should definitely check out FDR,go at like 5-6 in the morning and yous will have the whole park to yourselves,it gets very crowded during the day and that takes a lot of fun out of it cause there's always a bunch of assholes who think they own it and can just run into anybody.
on another note, i ended up buying a deck. went ahead and got an 8 1/8" like i used to ride.
didn't buy trucks yet. talked to a friend of mine that skates and asked what people were using these days, apparently everyone and their mom has a pair of indys or thunders. said something about bones stf wheels (never heard of em) but i'll probably go with some spits or rictas since those are what i remember. there seems to be quite a bit more choices now, it used to be just go in the shop and grab whatever looked nice and leave.. now everything seems all technical.
if anyone has some other suggestions go ahead.
