The tale of Jointsmith and the white widow.

OK,

My first move, after joining this site of course, was to purchase some gear.

From my local grow shop I procured a 125W Ecolight (blue spectrum), a 400W HPS lamp with ballast and reflector, and 10 WhiteWidow seeds.

On the evening of Sunday 05/01/2008 I germinated all 10 seeds in expanded peat pellets and put somewhere dark and warm. Within 48 hours all 10 seeds had cracked and were showing tap root so I planted them in 10 small plant pots using B&Q (UK chain of garden and hardware store) Multipurpose Compost mixed with 20% perlite, Pots labelled A - J.

I put these in an upturned chest of draws which I can use to hold the 125W light up in an area sectioned off from the rest of the bedroom using breathable roof lining lined with Mylar (i.e. Taped on).

After 2 days under the 125W light all but 2 plants had sprouted showing double leaves. After prodding through the soil a little I found the other two sproutlings but they hadn't got fully form leaves yet. After a night under the lights both of these had developed leave one of them (E) has 3 leaves instead of 2, I figure this can only be a good thing?

On 10/01/2008 the plants grew a little too close to their light to I have lowered them. One of the plants, which had all started to grow serrated leave has some heat damage and half of a serrated leaf seems to have gone pretty dead, the plant seems to be doing OK.

By a week in, 14/01/2008, all plants seem to be developing and are are least 2" across each so I have started them under the 400W hung approx 30" above the plants. There is a 7" fan sucking air from a hole in the curtain leading to a window for cooling and CO2.

Today, the plants seem to be developing reasonably fast, all are showing signs of new leaves developing and the existing leaves getting bigger.

The pictures below show 1. A germinated seed. 2. a plant at 2 days after planting. 3. Plant E, by far my favorite, three sets of leaves. 4. All plants under both 125W and 400W and loving it. 5. My grow setup.

Feel free to post any questions, advise or suggestions.

Peace out.

Looking good so far. You will need more light soon however. And careful on how much you water. That second picture shows pretty soggy soil.

Two week from planting, I think the plants have grown too close to the 125W light and this has caused heat damage to a few of the leave on 2 plants, E and F.

The tips of two leaves on E and one leaf on F are now brittle and feel pretty dead. This doesn't seem to be spreading and both plants are still growing new leaves.

I'm pretty sure it must have been the heat that caused it as I haven't given them any nutrients.

Will my plants recover from this set back or will this affect those plants a lot in the long run?

The pics aren't great but you can see the damaged leaves.

Nah, don't worry man your plants will be fine, just be careful not to keep the light too close or it will happen again.

OK, Six weeks in.

Went away for a long weekend and came home last night to find my plants very dehydrated and looking very miserable.

Gave them a water and left them over night. They since seem to have perked right up. I've got rid of some of the lower leaves, I think they are Nitrogen deficient, pics below.

Generally the plants look very healthy, I've been feeding then Miracle-Grow All Purpose nutrients every 10 days or so and watering when I think they need it.

I've turned the light off now as I am switching to a 12/12 cycle, so this is day One of flowering. I'm thinking of heading to my local grow shop to invest in some more specific nutrients.

I've included a picture below of what I think might be a female hair, not too sure so comments would be welcome.

The pics aren't great as its only a camera phone.

I'll probably start updating a bit more often as they start flowering.

Peace out.
