I don't think you understand what I'm asking. The question is, is it better to make seed by selfing, or is it better to back cross using another male of different genetics? Your end goal is to make seed that grows like the clone you want to recreate.
If you cross your prized clone with a male of different genetics you are creating new genetics. It could possibly produce a phenotype that is similar to the clone you want reproduced but you will need to run several seeds to find the mother you want. The result would be an F1 hybrid of your clone and the male you pollenate her with. It would NOT be a back cross because that requires the SAME genetics. You are introducing new genetics into your original clone.
If you self seed the plants you may come up with herms or mutants but you may strike gold. I have not tried it myself but I would assume that your herms won't show up until mid bloom and cause headaches in the garden. I have a dozen "Plush Berry" seeds that came from a purple pheno that seeded itself but I am very hesitant to run them. They are the color of elderberries and are very intriguing.
I have no experience in this next area but I have read Ed's chapter AND I stayed at a Holiday Inn last night so I should be an expert!
Sub seems to be against this idea completely and I understand his reasons. I cannot agree or disagree. I am just sharing what I know.
IF you truly want a clone only strain in seed form this is what I would attempt...
There is a spray called gibberellic acid GA3. If you spray it on a female clone it will cause her to produce male flowers when you bloom her/him. The male flowers will produce pollen. Get that pollen on a female in bloom and you will have your original clone in seed from! (That's the super simplified description!) Now you gotta pop a few seeds let em grow until you can take clones from them. LABEL THE MOMS AND THE CLONES VERY CAREFULLY so you can recall which plant the clones came from! Bloom the new mom plants and keep an eye out for males. If you don't want the males toss the blooming plant AND the clones unless you plan to breed or back cross with them. Keep every plant labeled clearly because at smoke time we are gonna pick which seed was a the closest representation of the original clone and keep her for more crops and more fun! If the seeds produced from the "reversed" male and original female are not close enough to the original you will now get to Back Cross! The only way to find a good male plant is to cross him out with other females. Find a good mother and a great father and start crossing generations and phenotypes until you get what you want. Sometimes it takes 5 crosses to make seed come out mostly identical. Sub seems to have magic plants that cross like peanut butter and jelly! Maybe its his bad ass eye for selection! Yer gonna have a ton of fun if you try this but it is a ton of work! I cannot make any claims on how safe this is or how well it works but I know a HUGE seed company who uses this method. Yer gonna have to read about breeding and learn when to pollenate and how to do it the way you like. I don't believe in hard fast rules in the garden because we are all gonna do things the way it works best for us!
I feel like Dennis Miller... I don't mean to go rant here but...
I hope all of my rambles helped you out!
If I made a mistake please correct me!
