Hey Garden Knowm,
I use 100% organic Coco-Peat Bricks (1kg). You place the brick(s) in a Styrofoam box and add 7-10 Litres of water, which expands it.
I have had nothing but EXCELLENT results in Coco-Peat. I normally mix around 5-10% Perlite in with it. It has the best drainage, but still retains enough moisture to last!
I Had 2 plants in Coco-Peat and 2 Plants in an Organic Soil (as experiment) in the same grow room with the same watering schedule (differed slightly because the soil dried out quicker) and noticed that the coco-peat plants won, hands down. Not only in growth, but also in nutrient and H20/02 uptake.
I have both plants in 15 Litre pots (3.96 Gallons). I water with 4 Litres (1.06 Gallons) of Water/Nutrient Solution every 7-10 days.
My temps in my grow room peak at 84F at the hottest part of the day and stay around 72-74F at the coolest part of the night.
I also have an analogy; that, when the coco-peat is dry, it is VERY light and i theorize that the roots are getting maximum oxygen saturation since they are not packed in, like most soil plants.
If done right, the results can be amazing. My plants have loved it and so have I.
P.S - 1 plant turned out to be male. When I ripped it out of the pot, It had such a large root ball mass. I washed all the coco-peat out of the roots and measured the root length to 43cm long, the plant was around 27 inches in height. It was a sad night.
Plus, there are great nutrients at hydro stores dedicated to Coco-Peat medium. I recommend Canadian Xpress Coco Growth for veg and Canadian Xpress Coco Bloom for the flowering cycle.
"
Xpress Coco contains a unique additive to specifically counter the salt problem inherent in all coco-peat and enabling luxury levels of nutrient uptake."
