Thoughts on my planned 315w cmh + cree cxa3070 build in a 4x4 tent

Hi Everyone,

After much, much, much searching and reading through countless threads, I have finally decided that my best course of action for my upcoming grow would be to use a 315w Ceramic Metal Halide (CMH) from here: http://advancedtechlighting.com/cdmmw.htm

I will supplement this with a roughly 200w of high quality cree CXA3070 LEDs. There will be 4 individual units running at approx 1.4A meaning each LED unit will be pulling about 50w.

I plan on putting this into a 4 foot x 4 foot tent. I will be using this setup as a flowering room. I will be running a single plant scrogg in there in order to pull the most I can off a single plant.

What does everyone think?

I think if you just went with 16 running at 1.6A you could kill and get tons of bud for the money. The main point in your post was scrogg. I believe srogg grows should have the lights as close as possible with even coverage. Now you said you will be running one plant? I do not know the proposed net size but you might be overkill with both lights. Do either the CHM or CXA. 4 cxa would be fine over one plant in a 2x2 net. Tried both and now I love the CXA but the CMH was WONDERFUL :)

Thanks Guys,

CannaBare - I live in a cool part of the world that is about to get even colder over the next few months so I have been concerned with there not being enough heat in my tent, which is what led me to the CMH. Fantastic spectrum as well!
I agree that I am being rather ambitious with my 1 plant scrog in a 4x4 tent, but I reccomend doing a read through this thread in which the FlowaMasta shares his methodology.

I will be shooting for something similar. It will probably take a few rounds to dial in properly but I am confident that I will be able to do it.

Sounds awesome.
200w led +330cmh= only 520w(not counting drivers, ballast, fans)...definately not over kill for a 4x4.

Should distribute the light great and get your yields, and your spectrums will provide some crazy quality.

You got a great plan. You should just pull the trigger and get it going. If anyone says that is a bad idea...they are either uneducated or just jealous.

The only issue you're going to have is paying too much for postage for your parts, lol. Even with the freight forwarding charges it was still cheaper for me to buy from the US than deal with the poor and expensive local light suppliers.

Good luck with your build - those 315s look insane. LED is easily expandable too - if you need more red/blue or just more lumens adding another 100-200W of emitters is super easy.

CPU coolers for the LED?

If your if a cool year round place then go with the CMH. Not tough to cool at all in my experience and the spectrum really is perfect! :)

CPU coolers for the LED?
Yep - Seems to be best in both price and performance. It's almost too good considering that you can find old CPU coolers for CPUs that are no longer mainstream for a very cheap price. It would be more than 2-3 times the price to source my own heatsink + fan combo.

I am totally going to get shafted with shipping but living over on this side of the globe you get used to everything having a premium. Still, the price for this lighting setup is not that much more than a standard HPS kit, and probably on par with a decent digital 600w hps kit.

Old cpu coolers are better built and contain more 'metal'...

Also grab any PC fans if you are 'rummaging' :)
