Thrips !!

I'm 4 weeks into flowering my 5 ladies and about a week or so ago i'v noticed the shiny rough trails on the foliage that these bastards are leaving, along with tiny black spots all over the leaves. The infestation seems to be severe and i dont know if its curable at this point and could really do with some help!! I'v seen them under a microscope and there are lots! big ones and little 1's which i pressume are the babies.
I have sprayed some bug killer around the room yesterday and i just want to know if its too late for me now ??

Thanks, not sure if i can grab spinosad in the u.k tho, been looking for it. is it cool to be spraying them whilst in flower?
and anyone know if the thrips will go for my buds??

If you want to try to make it without treating, that's your call. Otherwise you have to use the Hot Shots, or something similar. Hot Shots contain pyrethrins, which are safe to use before harvest. They are non-toxic to humans under normal conditions, and they are broken down by light.

I have to order my SPINOSAD from the us ebay.

It costs $19.99 for the 1 pint bottle but it costs $34 to fly it over to me. Im in the UK too.

Total cost of around £35-£40

Bit expensive i know but then you only need 2 Teaspoons in a 500ml spray bottle.


Yes it would be ok to spray your plant while in flowering but just becarefull of how much you spray the buds.

If it were me, and i have successfully sprayed spinosad on my flowers during 12/12, and i made sure that i sprayed my plants down as soon as the lights came on in my garden so that they had the whole 12 hour cycle to dry off. BUT DO NOT SOAK YOUR FLOWERS.

Spinosad is very difficult to find in the UK as you have to have a sprayers license in order to obtain it. Whereas you can order it straight from the US to your door.

Spinosad is found in alot of ANT KILLERS that you can buy in the garden centres but it is the wrong concentration to be of any use in our indoor environments.

WRONG

HOT SHOTS NO PEST STRIPS contain Dychlorvos. WHICH IS CARCENEGENIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I only use these hot shots no pest strips for a few days and then put them away. They release a toxic vapour into the air which kills any crawling or flying insects. IN ORDER TO BE THE BEST USE YOUR ENVIRONMENT SHOULD BE SEALED AND ALL FANS SHUT DOWN FOR A GOOD FEW HOURS PER DAY.

I REPEAT
HOT SHOTS NO PEST STRIPS ARE CARCENEGENIC YOU SHOULD NOT SPEND LONGER THAN 4 HOURS WITH THESE AND YOU SHOULD NOT USE IF YOU VENT INTO YOUR LIVING AREAS.

Like i have said i do use these but as a last resort. AND I DO NOT USE THEM PAST WEEK 7 OF 12/12.

but i'v heard neem oil does just as much as spinosad so i have ordered some. I feel that if i try completing the grow without treating this i will be smokin thrips for sure!!

Thats ok. The OP doesnt want to order things from the USA to the UK and i would think that the hot shots fogger is US based.

Neem only retards the growth of thrips. Trust me i battled them for an entire grow. IN the end it took getting some SPINOSAD from a friend who had ordered it online. I saw how good it was and bought myself some along with the hot shots no pest strips.

You could look for some FORTE FOG MINI FOGGERS around £6 each cover a 15m/2 room i think and contain pyrethrins good to use up to 2 weeks before harvest. If using foggers make sure you release during your dark cycle otherwise your lights and electrics could take a hit from the smoke.

There is also a veggie safe spray called PROVADO BUG SPRAY that you can get in WILKINSONS ASDA pretty much anywhere really which also kills thrips. Alot of the trouble with thrips is that they can become immune to some of the insecticides here in the UK which is why i use the SPINOSAD they cannot build up a tolerance to it.

Also something to mention is that the thrips spend a part of their life cycle in the medium too.

Which means you have to try and attack them in the soil/coco etc.

Alot of the sprays here in the UK are only good for plant spraying and not for drenching the medium with too.

Neem is a systemic and will be absorbed into the plant and make the plant taste bad (to the thrips) but it will not KNOCK THEM DOWN DEAD it works by retarding their growth over a number of generations of thrips. Thus eventually causing them to stop reproducing. But this could take weeks.

You could also try mixing up some tobacco juice spray. There are plenty of recipes on RIU for a mixture.

I used NEEM REPEL and PEST OFF and none of these managed to eradicate the thrips. I used predatory mites HYPOASPIS MILES which are Fungus GNat and thrips predators but they just controlled the numbers of the thrips rather than wipe them out.

Like i have already mentioned SPINOSAD is my tried and testing way of ridding yourself of these NUCLEAR RESISTANT F*CKERS.

The spray i got from b&q has seemed to have done the job!! along with the full cleanout and sterilize of the room.
i cant see any thrips in there now and before i sprayed it i only had to look once to see a leaf covered in them!
Well about the neem ,, ppl on other sites are saying they need nothing but neem or the SPINOSAD to contol there bug problems and its arrived today so im sure it wont hurt to spray some now.
Can anyone tell me how much neem i will need to mix into a 1 litre spray bottle?

Someone was kind enough to share what he does. i have these ingrediants ...
My spray consists of 8ml neem oil, per litre, of warm water ...a small piece of tea tree soap(size of your little finger nail, cinnamon bark-1 gram approx, put into some warm water mix all together until the soap forms a lather leave to cool for an hour..and that's it! the soap breaks down the stickiness of the neem oil and makes it a nice spray which wont clog the sprayer...then spray the buggers - under and on top of all the leaves and stems..and dont forget to remove the bark!
also treat your plants systemically through the soil.
